Pakistan opens 2 key trade routes with Afghanistan

Pakistan has opened two key trade routes with neighbour Afghanistan that will help boost bilateral trade, Pakistani officials said. Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistani Prime Minister's Special Representative for Afghanistan, on Saturday said the Angor Adda crossing with Afghanistan in South Waziristan tribal district was opened on Friday, two days ahead of its scheduled opening, Xinhua news agency reported. Meanwhile, officials in Kurram tribal district said that the Kharlachi border crossing was opened on Saturday.

Iran warns Europe not to give in to US pressures for extending arms embargo

Iran vowed retaliatory measures if Europe gives in to the US pressures for extending a UN arms embargo on Iran, Tasnim news agency reported. "We have warned the European countries that if they give in to the political and diplomatic pressures from the United States, Iran has effective measures in response," Abbas Mousavi, spokesman of the foreign ministry, told Tasnim. Washington wants to portray Tehran as a threat to security in the region when the US forces are the real threat to regional peace, stability and security, Mousavi said, Xinhua news agency reported.

Encounter between militants and security forces in J-K's Baramulla

An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Sopore area of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Sunday, police said. Security personnel launched a cordon and search operation around midnight in the Reban area of Sopore town following information on presence of militants, a police official said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter around 4.00 am on Sunday when the hiding militants opened firing on the security forces, who retaliated. No casualties have been reported so far, he said.

Floods, landslides kill 40 in Nepal, many missing

Heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides that killed at least 40 people and displaced thousands in western Nepal, officials said on Saturday. Twenty people were killed and at least 13 others were missing in Myagdi district, 200 km (125 miles) northwest of the capital Kathmandu, where several houses were destroyed on Friday, district administrator Gyan Nath Dhakal said. “Rescuers are looking for those who are still missing in Myagdi,” Dhakal said, adding that 50 people had been plucked to safety using helicopters. “Eleven people who were injured in the landslides have been moved to nearby hospitals,” he said.

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden have won Louisiana's twice-postponed presidential primary. Trump faced no true challenger for the Republican nomination, but four other GOP contenders ran against him on Louisiana's ballot Saturday. Biden faced 13 other Democrats on the ballot, though he already had locked up enough delegates in other states to become the party's nominee.

Flooding in parts of north Bengal; yellow weather warning issued

Heavy rainfall lashed north Bengal on Saturday, leading to flooding in low-lying areas, and the weather department issued a yellow warning for Himachal Pradesh for July 12 as the monsoon trough ran close to the foothills of the Himalayas passing eastward from Arunachal Pradesh to Punjab. The India Meteorology Department said heavy-to-very heavy rainfall is expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Sunday, and it could be accompanied by thunderstorm in the Gangetic West Bengal.
