EU emergency gas plan for winter enters into force on Tuesday

The European Union's (EU) emergency plan to prepare for a possible halt in Russian gas supplies will come into force on Tuesday, after it was published in the bloc's official journal the previous day.

Under the plan, EU countries are to reduce their gas consumption voluntarily by 15 per cent between August 1 this year and March 31, 2023, compared to the average consumption in the same period during the past five years, reports dpa news agency.

According to European Commission figures, a total of 45 billion cubic meters of gas are to be saved to reach the target.

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde to expand two-member ministry today

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will expand his two-member ministry on Tuesday, 41 days after he took oath as the CM.

Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister and Devendra Fadnavis took oath as deputy CM on June 30.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai at 11 am, an official said.

Altogether 18 ministers will be sworn in, a former minister told PTI on condition of anonymity. They will include nine each from the Shinde group and BJP, he added.

Chess Olympiad to conclude today

The 44th Chess Olympiad held at nearby Mamallapuram will conclude with the 11th and final round and the closing ceremony later on Tuesday.

The Olympiad being held in India for the first time ever saw a record number of teams taking part in the Open and women's sections. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will preside over the closing ceremony. FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich and recently elected deputy president and former World champion Viswanathan Anand will be attending the event. Former India captain and Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be attending the ceremony and is expected to be the star attraction. The Olympiad was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28 at the Nehru indoor stadium where the valedictory will also be held.

UP BJP's 'Tiranga Yatra' to begin today

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) will launch its two-day 'Tiranga Yatra' across the state from Tuesday during which the party will also approach the people and urge them to display the Tricolour at their homes.

BJP MPs, MLAs and party functionaries would be part of this yatra that is being taken out as part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign.

BJP General Secretary Amar Pal Maurya said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set a target to hoist 4.50 crore national flags in the state.

US pledges $1 billion more rockets, other arms for Ukraine

The Biden administration said Monday it was shipping its biggest yet direct delivery of weapons to Ukraine as that country prepares for a potentially decisive counteroffensive in the south against Russia, sending $1 billion in rockets, ammunition and other material to Ukraine from Defense Department stockpiles.
 
The new U.S. arms shipment would further strengthen Ukraine as it mounts the counteroffensive, which analysts say for the first time could allow Kyiv to shape the course of the rest of the war, now at the half-year mark.

Pralhad Joshi slams TMC leader Derek O'Brien for calling parliament 'Gujarat Gymkhana'

Amid the ongoing monsoon session and adjournments in parliament, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday took a jibe at TMC leader Derek O'Brien after the latter accused the centre of turning parliament into a 'Gujarat Gymkhana'.
 
Joshi also called out the TMC party for its "arrogance".
 
"TMC leader @derekobrienmp should stop preaching about democratic values and the sanctity of institutions. The people of Bengal have elected BJP as the main opposition but TMC, in its arrogance, has denied BJP the post of PAC Chairman," tweeted Joshi.
 
His remarks came after the TMC leader alleged that the parliament session was cut short.

The top U.N. Mideast envoy warned Monday that the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants is fragile and the cycles of violence" will only stop when an independent Palestinian state lives side-by-side with Israel.
 
Tor Wennesland called on Israeli and Palestinian leaders and the international community at an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the latest violence to strengthen diplomatic efforts to return to meaningful negotiations towards a viable two-state solution.

FBI searches Trump's Florida home in unprecedented move

Former US President Donald Trump has said that his home in Florida has been "raided" by the FBI. "My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents," Trump added on Monday in a statement released through his political action committee -- 'Save America'.
 
The former President was not present at his home at the time of raids. However, neither the FBI nor the US Justice Department have made any comments on the raids at Trump's house.
