Rakuten India, the global product and innovation centre for Japanese giant Rakuten Group, on Thursday announced the opening of its largest product, engineering and advanced research and development facility in Bengaluru, largest outside Japan.
With a capacity for housing more than 3,000 employees, the a 20-storeyed premise with around 3 lakh square feet of space currently accommodates 2,000 workers.
Sunil Gopinath, CEO of Rakuten India, told IANS that the new facility will enhance the company's capability for deep-tech innovation and R&D in areas such as e-commerce, fintech, content and entertainment, as well as AI in computer vision, speech, and natural language processing (NLP).

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested a man identified as Prem Prakash in connection with its ongoing money-laundering probe into an illegal mining case in Jharkhand, officials said on Thursday.
Prakash was taken into custody under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) around 2 am on Thursday and will be produced before a Ranchi court where the federal agency will seek his custody, they said.
This is the third arrest in the case.

10:33 AM377 new COVID-19 cases in Thane; active tally up at 2,285
As many as 377 new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Maharashtra's Thane district, taking its infection count to 739,777, a health official said on Thursday.
With the addition of the latest cases on Wednesday, the district currently has 2,285 active COVID-19 cases, as against 2,131 the previous day, he said.
The death toll in Thane remained unchanged at 11,939. The recovery count has reached 725,928, he added.

India logged 10,725 new coroanvirus infections taking the total tally of cases to 44,378,920, while the active cases declined to 94,047, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
The death toll climbed to 527,488 with 36 fatalities which includes five deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active cases comprise 0.21 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has increased to 98.60 per cent, the ministry said.
