We will continue peaceful non-violent protests: Sri Lankan agitators

Calling the actions of Sri Lankan authorities against the peaceful protesters at Galle Face as "brutal and torture", the agitators condemned the act and said that they will continue the protests, even if they are attacked.

Addressing a press conference, one of the protesters said, "We just want to condemn this brutal attack on the very peaceful creative protesters. We have been protesting for more than 105 days."

The statement came after a large military group, along with the police, launched a raid on Friday near the Presidential Secretariat and the protest site at Galle Face to clear the area of protesters. Several arrests were made.

The protester said that they were attacked "brutally" on July 22 and called it "torture". He further added that he had witnessed police attacking the protesters with their weapons and said that it was an assault on them.

"And we can't understand this, as it is inhuman because we are peaceful protesters, non-violent protesters. So we condemn this kind of brutal attack on peaceful protesters. We have been doing this as a protest of love in order to change society, in order to have justice. And we will continue this peaceful non-violent protest," he added.

Smriti Irani sends legal notice to Cong leaders over allegations against daughter

Union minister Smriti Irani on Sunday sent a legal notice to Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera, asking them to apologise for their "baseless and false" allegations against the BJP leader and her daughter.

Irani's action came a day after the Congress leaders alleged that her 18-year-old daughter Zoish Irani ran a bar illegally in Goa and also targeted the minister over this, demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sack her from his Cabinet.

If they do not tender an unconditional and unequivocal apology and withdraw their allegations, Irani will initiate civil and criminal proceedings against them, the legal notice said.

The notice has also been sent to 'Mahila' Congress leader Netta D'Souza and the Congress party.

The entire board of Cricket Scotland on Sunday resigned with immediate effect ahead of the release of a racism report in the sport.

The board sent the letter of resignation to the Interim Chief Executive Officer Gordan Arthur on Sunday morning ahead of the report to be published on Monday, coming after multiple allegations of racism and discrimination by players Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh were made last year.

Russia says strike on Ukrainian port hit military targets

Russian defence ministry officials on Sunday insisted that an airstrike on the port of Odessa less than a day after Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement on resuming grain shipments from there had hit only military targets.

In the seaport in the city of Odessa, on the territory of a shipyard, sea-based high-precision long-range missiles destroyed a docked Ukrainian warship and a warehouse with Harpoon anti-ship missiles supplied by the US to the Kyiv regime, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at a daily briefing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly televised address Saturday evening that the attack on Odesa destroyed the very possibility of dialogue with Russia.

The Congress in Karnataka will observe 'Mauna Satyagraha' (silent resistence) on Tuesday when their party supremo Sonia Gandhi will appear before the Enforcement Directorate officials probing the alleged money laundering in National Herald case, state unit president D K Shivakumar said.
