64 dead in Pakistan due to heavy rains

At least 64 people were killed across Pakistan due to the heavy monsoon rains currently lashing the country, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). According to a report released by the NDMA on Sunday night, at least 19 children and nine women are among those who lost their lives in different rain-related incidents in areas ranging from the north to the south of the country, reports Xinhua news agency. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was the worst-hit region with 25 deaths, followed by Sindh (12) and Balochistan and Punjab provinces which reported eight deaths each. At least 10 people died in the Gilgit-Baltistan region in the north of the country.

Tricolour sales dip sharply due to pandemic

With schools, colleges and a majority of other private establishments still closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there was an uncertainty over Independence Day functions which has had a direct impact on the sale of tricolours by the Khadi Gram Udyog. "Every year, we witness a rise in the sale of the national flag. But this year, there is almost no demand. Except for government offices, most private establishments are not holding the flag hoisting ceremony. They say that since everyone is working from home, there is no point is calling employees for I-Day celebrations," said an employee of the Khadi Ashram in Lucknow. He further said that nearly 70 per cent of the sale come from schools, colleges and other educational institutes but this year, there are hardly any orders from them. Business is down by 90 per cent.

Muraleedharan raises concerns over lack of power supply in landslide-hit Idukki

Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Monday raised concerns over inadequate healthcare facilities, road infrastructure in Kerala and claimed that people weren't receiving power supply amid landslide in Idukki. Muraleedharan also targeted the Kerala Electricity Minister MM Mani stating that Idukki does not have an uninterrupted supply of electricity and areas hit by landslide did not have power for more than four days. 43 persons lost their lives after a landslide, triggered by torrential rains, occurred in a residential area in Rajamala of Kerala's Idukki district "Idukki, the home district of Kerala's Electricity Minister, MM Mani does not have uninterrupted supply of electricity. The landslide areas did not have power for more than four days," Muraleedharan tweeted.

Taliban ready for intra-Afghan talks in 7 days if prisoner swap completed

The Taliban is ready to begin intra-Afghan negotiations within a week if the prisoners' release is completed, said spokesperson Suhail Shaheen. Hong Kong media tycoon arrested under national security law

Continuing with the ruthless suppression of the dissenting voices in Hong Kong since the national security law was imposed, Jimmy Lai, a media tycoon and critic of the Chinese Communist Party, was arrested on Monday on charges of "collusion with a foreign country". The New York Times reported that Lai's company Next Digital publishes Apple Daily, a fiercely pro-democracy newspaper that regularly takes on the Hong Kong government and the Chinese leadership. Farmers suffer due to scant rainfall in UP's Aligarh

Farmers in several areas said that Kharif crops are suffering due to deficit rainfall in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Paddy, sugarcane, maize and millet crops are suffering a lot due to insufficient rainfall this time in Aligarh. The farmers in Lodha region of Aligarh said that the canals are also lying dry and the uneven electric supply is destroying the crops. "There has been almost no rainfall in the last two months. Government is also not releasing water in canals. The administration is saying that they can not release water as they are worried about the floods. Crops are being destroyed due to lack of water," Brajesh Pal Singh, a farmer told ANI.

5.6 magnitude quake hits southwest of Africa

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Southwestern region of the African continent on Sunday (Local time). "Prelim Magnitude 5.6 earthquake southwest of Africa Aug-09 23:42 UTC," tweeted the US Geological Survey (USGS) about southwest of the continent. The quake occurred at 23:42 UTC on Sunday at a 10 km depth. Earthquakes in the region are somewhat rare though they are frequently experienced in certain parts of the West Indies; but an earthquake of deep focus in this region is certainly a more rare occurrence, if not entirely without precedent.

8 including 6 French tourists killed in Niger gunmen attack

Eight persons including six French tourists and two Nigeriens -- a guide and a driver, have been killed by armed individuals in the Koure area, according to the Nigerien ministry of interior and public security. The Elysee Palace on Sunday confirmed the incident. "French nationals were killed on Sunday in Niger," President Emmanuel Macron's office told French media and denounced the attack, adding that Macron had spoken over the phone with Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou, Xinhua reported. The victims, who went to see giraffes in the Koure area about 70 km southeast of Niamey in the Kollo department, Tillabry region, were in a vehicle belonging to a French NGO Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development.
