BJP MP urges Modi to table Population Control Bill in Parliament
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anil Agarwal has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce the Population Control Bill in the next session of the Parliament. In a letter addressed to Modi, the BJP's Rajya Sabha MP said "population explosion" needs to be checked, and the only way to make India 'Atmanirbhar' or self-reliant to is to introduce the population control law. "Everyone wants the population control law... be Hindu or Muslim. This law will eliminate most of the country's problems. China (the world's most populous country) will soon be left behind by the rate at which the population in India is increasing," Agarwal told IANS.
Karnataka shepherd, marooned five days on river island, rescued
A 20-year-old shepherd, marooned on a small island in the Krishna river in Karnataka's Yadgir district, has been rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), its chief said on Sunday. The NDRF team managed to rescue Toppanna, 20, despite the strong and risky currents in the river, following extensive rains and floods, Director General Satya Pradhan said. Toppanna reportedly spent five days alone on the Edadamali island near Chayabhagavti temple in Hunasagi taluk of Yadgir, over 500 km north of Bengaluru.
Yemen's rebels say floods, heavy rains left over 130 dead
Yemen's Houthi rebels said Sunday that floods have swept through rebel-held parts of the country since mid-July amid heavy seasonal rains, leaving more than 130 dead and damaging more than 260 homes. The Houthi-run Health Ministry said at least 124 others were injured by the flooding in parts of northern Yemen controlled by the rebels, including the capital Sanaa and its historic Old City, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Storm floods Greek island, leaves 7 dead, including a baby
Seven people, including an elderly couple and an 8-month-old baby, have been found dead as a storm hit the Greek island of Evia, authorities said Sunday. One person was still missing and dozens of others were trapped by floodwaters in their homes and cars. Greece's meteorological service said parts of Evia saw rainfall that reached 300 millimeters (11.8 inches), some 80 per cent of the annual rainfall for the area, which is only about 375 millimeters (14.8 inches), usually with negligible rain during the summer.
Heavy rains kill 58 in Pakistan
Heavy rains in the last three days have killed at least 58 people in Pakistan, officials said on Sunday. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was the worst-hit where 19 people were killed. Another 12 died in the southern province of Sindh, while 10 died in Gilgit-Baltistan, eight in Punjab, eight in Balochistan and one in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, according to the NDMA, adding that another 15 people were injured. It said that 158 houses were fully destroyed and another 128 partially damaged across the county.
800 villages in UP affected by flood
Over 800 villages in 20 districts of UP have been hit by flooding and several rivers are flowing above the danger level, the relief commissioner's office said Sunday. As 802 villages in Ambedkar Nagar, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Ballia, Balrampur, Barabanki, Basti, Deoria, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Khiri, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Mau, Pilibhit, Pratapgarh, Santkabir Nagar, Siddharthanagar and Sitapur districts have been affected. Of these, 428 villages have been disconnected with other areas, the office said.
