President, PM to address Governors' Conference on NEP

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the inaugural session of the Governors' Conference on the National Education Policy on Monday through video conference, the Prime Minister's Office said. The conference titled 'Role of NEP-2020 in Transforming Higher Education' is being organised by the Ministry of Education. The Governors' Conference is also being attended by education ministers of all states, vice-chancellors of state universities and other senior officials. The statement noted that the NEP-2020 is the first education policy of the twenty-first century which was announced after 34 years of the previous National Policy on Education in 1986.

Honey Singh opens up on fake social media followers scam

Rapper Honey Singh, known for a fiercely loyal fan base, has opened up about the fake social media followers scam, saying when he started his career many people had made many accusations against him. Honey Singh's musical rival, rapper Badshah's name recently cropped up in a sensational social media racket linked to creating fake 'followers and likes', after Mumbai Police investigated at least 20 prominent personalities including the latter.

Badshah had subsequently admitted to spending Rs 72 lakh to garner 7.2 crore views for his song "Paagal", in an attempt to create a world record. Without naming anyone, Honey Singh told IANS: "I have heard a lot of rumours about rappers who have bought fake views for their songs. I want to say that when I started my career and I was getting popular people had made many accusations."

Seven killed as van collides head-on with trailer in Rajasthan

Seven people were killed after their van collided head-on with a trailer in Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, police said on Sunday. The accident occurred near Kesarpura, which comes under the jurisdiction of Bijolia police station, on Saturday night when the victims were on their way to Bhilwara from Kota, they said. The deceased were identified as Umesh (40), Mukesh (23), Jamna (45), Amar Chand (32), Raju (21), Radheshyam (56)and Shivlal (40).

Volkswagen's labour chief rules out four-day week to save jobs

Volkswagen sees no need for a four-day week at its plants to secure jobs despite a growing shift to electric cars that are easier to build and require fewer workers, the company's head of labour relations was quoted saying on Sunday. Germany's largest trade union IG Metall on Aug. 15 proposed negotiating for a transition to a four-day week across industry to help secure jobs, against the backdrop of economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis and structural shifts in the auto sector.

200 Sikh families from Afghanistan put up in gurudwaras across Delhi

Close to 200 families belonging to the Sikh Community who have arrived here from Afghanistan have been put up at Gurudwaras that are run by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee. "Close to 200 families have come here and are staying in Gurudwaras. We are making the arrangements for their accommodation and ticket as well till the time they do not get permanent citizenship. We are also providing them assistance in employment as well," Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjinder Singh Sirsa told ANI.

Nissan's Ghosn gone, American Kelly faces Japan trial alone

His boss Carlos Ghosn escaped financial misconduct charges by fleeing the country, but another former Nissan executive is still awaiting trial in Japan: Greg Kelly Kelly's trial in Tokyo District Court is to open September 15, nearly two years after his arrest, and the same day he turns 64. If convicted on charges related to underreporting Ghosn's income, Kelly could face up to a decade in prison. Even if acquitted, he has already paid a heavy price, unable to leave Japan and go home to Tennessee while out on bail. He has yet to see his newborn grandchild. His wife got a student visa to stay with him in Tokyo. Kelly, like Ghosn, says he is innocent.

New Telangana Secretariat will have Temple, Church, two Mosques: Chief Minister

In the new Secretariat, Temple, Mosques, and Church would be constructed by the government, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Saturday. He declared that after the end of the ensuing Legislative Session, foundation stones will be laid for all the places of worship on the same day and construction works will be launched and completed on a fast note mirroring the true Ganga Jamuna Tehjeeb of the State. Rao held a meeting with the elder members of the Muslim community at Pragathi Bhavan on Saturday over the construction of a new Mosque at the Secretariat and other issues. On this occasion, he discussed several issues at length. He elicited their opinion and suggestions.

Overhead electric line tower damaged in controlled blast in Madhya Pradesh

A tower of the overhead electric line was damaged in a "blast carried out for developmental works" near Dundi station in Madhya Pradesh, Priyanka Dikshit, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO), West Central Railway (WCR) said on Saturday. A video went viral in which an accident appears to have taken place allegedly while a blasting work was underway at Dundi railway station in Jabalpur. Terming the incident as 'unfortunate', Dikshit said it was a planned development work and precautions had been taken.

Death toll from gas explosion in Bangladesh mosque rises to 21

At least 21 people were confirmed dead as a result of a gas explosion in the Baitus Salah Jame mosque, located in the Narayanganj city of Bangladesh. Dozens of injured worshipers are still receiving medical treatment, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. The explosion occurred on the evening of Friday as people gathered in the mosque for the evening prayer. According to preliminary data from Narayanganj Fire Service's Deputy Assistant Director Abdullah Al Arefin, as quoted in the report, gas leaked out from underground pipes and accumulated inside the mosque and then detonated "due to sparks when someone tried to switch [one of the six] air conditioners or fans on or off."

Trump refuses to condemn Russia over Navalny

President Donald Trump has refused to condemn Russia over the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, saying he has not seen proof. He said the case was "tragic" but urged reporters to focus instead on China, which he said was a bigger threat to the world than Russia, the BBC reported on Saturday. Nato and Germany say there is "proof beyond doubt" that Navalny was attacked with a Novichok nerve agent. His team said he was poisoned on the Kremlin's orders. Russia denies this.

Typhoon Haishen unleashes rain, strong winds in south Japan

The second powerful typhoon to slam Japan in a week unleashed fierce winds and rain on southern islands on Sunday, blowing off rooftops and leaving homes without power as it edged northward into an area vulnerable to flooding and mudslides. Weather officials warned that rainfall from what could be a record storm would be as fierce as a bucket of water poured over your head. Warnings have been issued, days in advance, for people to be ready to take shelter and stock up on food and water. Several rivers on the main southwestern island of Kyushu were at risk of overflowing, officials said.
