Two killed, 10 injured after bus overturns in Chhattisgarh

The driver and conductor of a bus were killed and at least 10 passengers received injuries after the vehicle overturned in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district, a police official said on Monday.
 
The accident took place around Sunday midnight near Sambalpur village under Arjuni police station limits when the private bus, with around 45 passengers on-board, was heading towards Jagdalpur from Raipur, he said.
 
Prima facie, it seems one of the tyres burst following which the vehicle overturned, the official said.

WPI inflation spikes to a 27-month high in Feb owing to costlier food, fuel

The wholesale price index-based inflation doubled to a 27-month high in February, led by soaring fuel prices and an uptick in food prices. This effectively dims hopes for any policy rate reduction in the near term to spur economic growth amid the pandemic.
 
Wholesale inflation rose to 4.17 per cent in February as against 2.03 per cent in the previous month, data released by the ministry of commerce and industry showed on Monday. Its retail price counterpart, consumer price index released on Friday, also saw inflation surge to a three-month high of 5.03 per cent in February, on the back of sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices. SUV case: Arrested Mumbai cop Vaze suspended again

Mumbai Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze -- arrested in connection with the case pertaining to an abandoned SUV near the home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani -- was suspended from service for the second time in about 17 years, official sources said here on Monday.
 
The suspension order was issued by the Mumbai Police headquarters, a day after Vaze was sent to the custody of National Investigation Agency (NIA) till March 25.
 
An officer of the 1990-batch of the Maharashtra Police cadre, Vaze, 49, had earlier been suspended for his role in the custodial death of Khawaja Yunus, a suspect in the 2002 Ghatkopar bomb blast case.

Nationwide bank strike: Cheques worth Rs 16,500 crore stuck

The two-day nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Union in protest against privatisation of the government banks began on Monday. The leader of a major union claimed total success impacting the clearance of two crore cheques/instruments worth about Rs 16,500 crore.
 
"On an average, about 2 crore cheques/instruments worth about Rs 16,500 crore are held up for clearance. Government treasury operations and all normal banking transactions have been affected," C.H. Venkatachalam, General Secretary, All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) said.
 
According to him, about 10 lakh bank employees struck work signalling their negation of the government's decision to privatise its banks. READ MORE...

Banking services hit in Punjab, Haryana

Banking services in Punjab and Haryana were hit on Monday as employees under the aegis of the United Forum of Bank Unions went on a two-day countrywide strike to protest against the proposed privatisation of two state-owned banks. Banking services like cheque clearances and deposits were affected, said protesting bank employees.
 
However, private sector banks remained open.
 
United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions, had given a strike call for March 15 and 16, and claimed that about 10 lakh bank employees and officers of the banks will participate in the strike.

Services of PSBs hit in Bengal as bank unions go on strike to protest against privatisation

Banking operations were severely hit in West Bengal on Monday as officers and employees of public sector lenders went on a strike to protest against the proposed privatisation of two state-owned banks. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions, had given a nationwide strike call for March 15 and 16, and claimed that about 10 lakh employees and officers of the lenders will participate in the ceasework.
 
"We have got a tremendous response. Our strike call has also been supported by the National Confederation of Officers Association, farmers, CITU and AITUC," All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) joint general secretary Sanjoy Das said.
 
There are around 6,000 branches of public, private and foreign banks in West Bengal, he said.

Banking services in the state got affected on Monday as around 40,000 bank employees and officers have gone on a two-day strike to protest against the government's decision to privatise two more state-run banks.
 
Last month, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced the privatisation of two public sector banks (PSBs) as part of the government's disinvestment plan in the Union Budget for the next fiscal.
 
The pan-India strike on March 15-16 has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine unions. It has claimed that about 10 lakh bank employees and officers of the banks are participating in the strike.
