Latest News: Stringent tests required to be passed now to get driving licence, says Gadkari

Those seeking driving licences are now required to pass a set of stringent skill tests that include reversing a vehicle with reasonable accuracy to qualify for it, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
 
Also, passing percentage in order to be eligible to get a driving licence in all regional transport offices (RTOs) has been fixed at 69 per cent, Road Transport, Highways and MSMEs Minister Nitin Gadkari told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
 
"In the case of vehicle having a reverse gear, driving the vehicle backwards, reverse it into a limited opening either to the right or left under control and with reasonable accuracy", is one of the parameters of qualifying in the driving skill test, Gadkari said.
 
This is as per provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

Latest News: Lok Sabha records 114% productivity

Lok Sabha was on Thursday adjourned sine die, bringing an end to the nearly two-month-long Budget session which registered 114 per cent productivity.
 
The session started on January 29 and was originally slated to end on April 8 but several members had urged Speaker Om Birla to end it early so that they can focus on electioneering in four states and Puducherry.
 
Speaker Birla had recently tested positive for Covid-19 and was not attending the House in the last week of the session.

Latest News: Puri inaugurates airport in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool

Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri virtually inaugurated the Kurnool airport in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, an official statement said.
 
Kurnool is the sixth airport in Andhra Pradesh to become functional after Kadapa, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada, it said.
 
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy and senior officials of the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) were also present virtually at the event on Thursday.

Latest News: Param Bir moves Bombay HC against Anil Deshmukh

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh on Thursday filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who he claimed asked police officer Sachin Waze to collect Rs 100 crore from bars and restaurants.
 
The PIL also raised the issue of alleged corruption in police transfers and postings in the state.
 
The IPS officer had earlier this week approached the Supreme Court, which on Wednesday termed the matter as quite serious but asked him to approach the High Court.

Latest News: CRPF officer killed, 3 jawans injured in militant attack in Srinagar

One CRPF officer was killed and three jawans sustained injuries in a militant attack in Lawaypora on the outskirts of Srinagar on Thursday, police said.
 
The militants opened fire on the CRPF personnel in Lawaypora in the Parimpora police station area in Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said.
 
Four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured in the attack and they were rushed to a nearby private hospital, where the officer was declared dead on arrival, the official said.

Asserting that his administration has brought transparency in the system and put an end to corruption, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said his priority is to speed up the development work in the union territory.
 
He said there is a law and there are agencies in the country which look into where the money pumped by the central government had gone in the past and they are doing their jobs sincerely.
 
"The money has come (from the centre) in large numbers in the past but the question is had the required development work taken place. We have brought transparency in the system and put an end to the corruption so that the work is actually done on the ground," Sinha told reporters here.

Latest News: NHAI to raise Rs 1 trillion through monetisation of highways in next 5 years

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to raise Rs 1 lakh crore through monetisation of national highways in the next five years and exhorted industry players to come forward to reap rich dividends by investing in it.
 
Gadkari, who holds road transport portfolio along with MSME, said this will spur growth and the funds could be roped in creating sound infrastructure.
 
"NHAI is planning to raise Rs 1 lakh crore through monetisation of highways under toll operate transfer (TOT) mode in the next five years," Gadkari said addressing CII's national conference on "Road Infrastructure - Creating Demand: Stimulating Growth".
