NIA arrests TMC leader Chhatradhar Mahato in 2009 murder case

The National Investigation Agency arrested TMC leader Chhatradhar Mahato in connection with the killing of a CPI(M) leader in 2009, soon after he cast his vote in Lalgarh during the first phase of polling in West Bengal, a senior official said on Sunday.
 
Mahato, the former convenor of the Maoist-backed People Against Police Atrocities (PCPA), was nabbed from his residence in Jhargram district by an NIA team comprising of 40-45 personnel late on Saturday, hours after he exercised his franchise.
 
"He was arrested in connection with the 2009 killing of CPI(M) leader Prabir Mahato. He has been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. We will produce him at a city court on Sunday," the NIA official said.

Ship blocking Suez Canal moves slightly, unclear when it will refloat

Efforts to dislodge a giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal have allowed its stern and rudder to move, but it remains unclear when the vessel will be refloated, the head of the canal authority said on Saturday.
 
The 400 metre (430 yard) long Ever Given became wedged diagonally across a southern section of the canal amid high winds early on Tuesday, blocking one of the world's busiest waterways.
 
A combination of dredging material from around the ship and pulling and pushing the vessel with tugboats made minor progress in dislodging the ship on Saturday, two SCA sources said. One source said there had been some movement at the bow of the ship. READ MORE...

Myanmar forces kill 114 civilians in deadliest day since coup

As Myanmar's military celebrated the annual Armed Forces Day holiday with a parade Saturday in the country's capital, soldiers and police elsewhere reportedly killed dozens of people as they suppressed protests in the deadliest bloodletting since last month's coup, AP reported.
 
The online news site Myanmar Now reported late Saturday that the death toll had reached 114. A count issued by an independent researcher in Yangon who has been compiling near-real time death tolls put the total at 107, spread over more than two dozen cities and towns.
 
Both numbers are higher than all estimates for the previous high on March 14, which ranged in counts from 74 to 90.

Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi will address a public meeting today with DMK President M K Stalin in Tamil Nadu's Salem district. In a statement issued, the DMK party said Gandhi will address the public rally to be held at Seelanaickenpatti in Salem district.
 
The public meeting will be chaired by Stalin. Leaders of the DMK-led alliance parties -- CPI, CPI-M, IUML, VCK, MMK and others will also address the rally. The Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu are slated for April 6.
