India logs 12,428 new Covid-19 cases, lowest in 238 days

India logged 12,428 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is the lowest in 238 days, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.
 
The country's active caseload stands at 163,816, which is the lowest in 241 days.
 
The active cases account for less than 1 per cent of total cases and are currently at 0.48 per cent, which is the lowest since March 2020.

UP govt sounds alert on Zika virus

The Uttar Pradesh government has sounded an alert on Zika virus in the state and issued an advisory after the first case was detected in Kanpur over the weekend.
 
As per an official order issued by Ved Vrat Singh, Director General of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, all the chief medical officers in the state have been asked to keep a vigil on suspected cases while the laboratory at King George's Medical University has been roped in to conduct the tests.
 
The advisory calls for general preparedness to tackle Zika virus cases, following orders from the Union Health Ministry.

Delhi University issues special cut-off list

Delhi University has released a special cut-off list only for a few eligible students, an official said.
 
Registrar of the university, Vikas Gupta, said on Monday the special cut-off is only for those candidates who were eligible for admission on the basis of the cut-off list issued earlier but could not take admission due to some reasons.
 
Delhi University has 70,000 seats for undergraduate course. It has so far released three cut-off lists for admission to these 70,000 seats.

Global Covid-19 caseload tops 244 mn

The global coronavirus caseload has topped 244 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.95 million and vaccinations soared to over 6.83 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
 
In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll and the total number number of vaccine doses administered stood at 244,054,440, 4,954,527 and 6,833,629,339, respectively.

India needs to reduce dependence on import of crude oil: Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday said that the country imports petrol and diesel worth Rs 8 trillion and it will increase to Rs 25 trillion in the next five years if the trend of its utilisation continues.
 
"India currently spends nearly Rs 8 trillion on import of diesel and petrol, which may increase to Rs 25 trillion in next five years, if the trend continues. Amarinder Singh, who had resigned last month as chief minister and had announced that he will be quitting the Congress, said he will soon announce the launch of his political party to serve the interests of Punjab and its people.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday paid tribute to 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans, killed in the 2019 terror attack, at the memorial in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.
 
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also laid a wreath at the memorial, paying tribute to the personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.
 
Earlier on Monday, Shah visited the CRPF camp and interacted with the security personnel at Lethpora in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi will be presiding over a meeting with core party leaders to discuss the upcoming Assembly elections to Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, among other issues.
 
The meeting will be held at party headquarters.

Coronavirus update: WHO's technical group to meet on Oct 26 to consider EUL of Covaxin

The World Health Organization's technical advisory group will meet on October 26 to consider the Emergency Use Listing (EUL) of Covaxin, a vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech protecting against COVID-19, the global health agency's chief scientist said on Sunday.
 
"The technical advisory group will meet on Oct 26th to consider EUL for #Covaxin. @WHO has been working closely with @BharatBiotech to complete the dossier.
