Cattle scam: ED likely to initiate process of taking Anubrata Mondal to New Delhi

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) might initiate the process of taking Trinamool Congress strongman Anubrata Mondal to New Delhi for questioning in connection with the multi-crore cattle smuggling scam in West Bengal.
 
A team of interrogation experts of ED from New Delhi is already here. On Thursday morning, they left for Asansol in West Burdwan district to question Mondal at the special correctional home there. As per ED sources, the probe team will restrict their line of questioning to the financial matters involved in the scam, especially the ones related to quantum jump in the assets and properties of Mondal and his family members during the peak period of cattle smuggling.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in poll-bound Gujarat on Friday, the CM's office said on Thursday.
 
His cabinet colleagues Narottam Mishra, Vishwas Sarang, Arvind Bhadoria and Inder Singh Parmar have already been campaigning for the ruling BJP in Gujarat, where polls for the 182-member Assembly will be held in two phases - in 89 seats on December 1 and in 93 seats on December 5.

The Congress in Karnataka on Thursday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, alleging he is directly responsible for a corrupt electoral practice by assigning a private entity to collect door-to-door voter information.
 
Congress general secretary and the party's Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said at a press conference here that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, the civic agency, authorised a private firm in August to carry out a door-to-door survey of voters 'free of cost' who gathered information about their gender, mother tongue, collected voter ID and Aadhaar details.

Rich nations are making a push to include language such as "major emitters and "top emitters" in the cover text of the ongoing UN climate summit in Egypt which is not acceptable to India, a member of the Indian delegation said.
 
Developed countries want that all top emitters, particularly the top 20 including India and China, make intense emission cuts (to limit warming to 1.5 degree Celsius) and not just the rich nations which are historically responsible for climate change, the member told PTI on condition of anonymity.

27% samples of edible oil, other food items from 4 firms in Thane found adulterated: FDA

At least 27 per cent of the 56 samples of cooking oil and other food items collected from four companies in Maharashtra's Thane district have been found adulterated or with false claims, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials said.
 
The FDA's (Foods) Joint Commissioner, S R Kekre, said the samples tested revealed that palmolein oil was mixed in products sold as sunflower and soyabean oils, rice bran oil was mixed in a product sold as mustard oil and vegetable oil was mixed in products claimed to be milk cream and ghee.

20 new Covid-19 cases recorded in Thane; active tally at 148

Maharashtra's Thane district has recorded 20 new cases of coronavirus, raising its infection count to 7,47,184, a health official said on Thursday.
 
These latest numbers were reported on Wednesday. The number of active COVID-19 cases in the district has come down to 148 as compared to 165 the previous day, he said.

The European Central Bank (ECB) sees growing risks for financial stability in the euro area and warns that the likelihood of a recession is rising there.
 
Presenting the bank's financial stability review here on Wednesday, ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos said that "in our assessment, risks to financial stability have increased and a technical recession in the euro area has become more likely", reports Xinhua news agency.

The rupee depreciated 37 paise to 81.63 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, tracking the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and a muted trend in domestic equities.
 
Forex traders said the American currency strengthened after strong US retail sales data pointed to resilient consumption despite a slowing economy, adding room for tighter policy by the US Federal Reserve.

Claiming that irregularities have been committed in paying insurance sum to farmers in Odisha under a central scheme, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan sought a probe into the alleged malpractices.
 
Pradhan, who held a meeting with farmers during his recent visit to Bargarh district, urged Union Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar to institute an investigation into the "scam" pulled off in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), and review the sum paid by the insurance company enlisted by the state government under the central scheme.

As Amazon begins mass layoffs, employees say horrendous way to treat people

As Big Tech goes through the layoff season, e-commerce giant Amazon has confirmed job losses at the company, saying that in the current macroeconomic environment, some teams are "making adjustments" amid "consolidation of some teams and programmes".
 
The company did not reveal the exact number of employees being hit although earlier reports put the number at 10,000 employees or 3 per cent of its workforce. "As part of our annual operating planning review process, we always look at each of our businesses and what we believe we should change," a company spokesperson was quoted as saying TechCrunch late on Wednesday.

India logs 635 new Covid-19 cases in a day, active tally dips to 7,175

India logged 635 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of Covid cases to 4,46,67,311, while the active cases declined to 7,175, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
 
The death toll climbed to 5,30,546 with 11 fatalities which includes nine deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.

North Korea fired ballistic missile toward eastern waters: South Korea

North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters on Thursday, South Korea's military said, hours after the North threatened to launch "fiercer" military responses to the US bolstering its security commitment to its allies South Korea and Japan.
 
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a brief statement that it detected the launch from North Korea but gave no further details like how far the weapon flew and where it landed.

Sri Lankan navy attacks Indian fisherman, arrests 14 others

An Indian fisherman sustained injuries to his eye after being allegedly attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy which also arrested 14 fishers for alleged maritime boundary violation, an official said.
 
The injured fisherman was identified as Johnson of Rameswaram and he was injured in his eye when the Lankan naval personnel attacked him late on Wednesday, he said.
