29 new COVID-19 cases in Thane; active tally at 298

Maharashtra's Thane district has reported 29 new cases of coronavirus, taking its infection count to 7,46,762, a health official said on Wednesday.

With the addition of the latest cases on Tuesday, there are currently 298 active COVID-19 cases in the district, which comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, he said.

The death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,965, the official said.

Seoul: North Korea fires more than 10 missiles after threat

South Korea says North Korea has fired a total of more than 10 missiles off its eastern and western coasts.

South Korea's military said the missiles of various kinds flew toward the Korean Peninsula's eastern and western coasts, but gave no further details.

Earlier South Korea's military said it detected the three North Korean short-range ballistic missiles fired off the peninsula's eastern coast. One of the missiles landed near the rivals' sea border, prompting South Korea to issue an air raid alert on one of its islands.

Diaspora group launches online petition urging Blinken to reduce visa wait time

A US-based diaspora body on Tuesday launched an online petition campaign urging the Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to reduce the long waitlist for various types of American visas being issued from India.

"We request the State Department, Secretary of State Mr Anthony Blinken and the US embassies in India to eliminate wait times for visa appointments in India.

"Even after a two-year-long Covid-era pause in visa appointments at the US embassies in India, the visa appointment situation is far from normal, requiring 300 to 900 days of wait time based on the visa types, Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies or FIIDS said launching its online petition campaign.

Officials: Saudis tell US that Iran may attack the kingdom

Saudi Arabia has shared intelligence with American officials that suggests Iran could be preparing for an imminent attack on the kingdom, three US officials have said.

The heightened concerns about a potential attack on Saudi Arabia as the Biden administration is criticising Tehran for its crackdown on widespread protests and condemning it for sending hundreds of drones as well as technical support to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine.

We are concerned about the threat picture, and we remain in constant contact through military and intelligence channels with the Saudis, the National Security Council said in a statement. We will not hesitate to act in the defense of our interests and partners in the region.

Ex-CM Prithviraj Chavan slams Shinde government over relocation of major projects away from Maharashtra

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan Tuesday slammed the Maharashtra government over the relocation of several projects from Maharashtra to other states.

While speaking to ANI Prithviraj Chavan alleged that interference from the Central Government and political instability caused investors to move out of Maharashtra state.

"When there is political instability investors consider very carefully before investing and the current status in Maharashtra is that where the government is not even able to form the full cabinet which does not send a good signal for the investors," Chavan said.

China may use cyberattacks rather than military, US official warns Taiwan

US senior director of the foundation for the Defence of Democracies Centre on Cyber and Technology Innovation, Mark Montgomery, warned Taiwan and said that China would use cyberattacks rather than its military against Taipei, Taipei Times reported citing Voice of America's Chinese-language Web site.

On Saturday, Voice of America's Chinese language updated its website and quoted Montgomery as saying that Beijing might try to use cyber tools to destroy Taiwan's satellite communications, according to Taipei Times.

He further said that the US assistance would involve researching critical infrastructure, finding vulnerabilities, and devising ways to protect against them.

Myanmar extends Covid-19 restrictions until end of November

Myanmar extended its Covid-19 preventive measures until November 30, the Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment for Covid-19 has said in a statement.

The extension is applied to all Covid-19 restrictions that expired on October 31, except the ones that will be eased, the committee added.

The statement said that the extension covers all orders, announcements, directives previously issued by respective government organisations and ministries in order to contain the pandemic, Xinhua news agency reported.

KCR does drama before polls, has direct line to PM Modi: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attacked the TRS government in Telangana saying that it supports the BJP on legislations in Parliament and that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao "does drama" before the polls but is "in direct line" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a rally during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi said that "BJP and TRS work together" and the Prime Minister "gives orders to your CM on phone".

"Whenever there's any bill in Parliament, TRS supports BJP and diverts attention from Opposition issues. BJP and TRS work together. Your CM (KCR) does drama before polls but he's in direct line with PM Modi. PM Modi gives orders to your CM on phone," Rahul Gandhi said.

Mallikarjun Kharge seeks time-bound judicial probe into Morbi bridge collapse case

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday sought a time-bound judicial enquiry into the Morbi bridge collapse case that claimed 135 lives on Sunday evening.

"A time-bound judicial enquiry led by a sitting SC/HC Judge is the only recourse," Kharge tweeted.

He said that accountability must be set for the loss of lives in Morbi after the suspension bridge collapsed.

"Accountability must be set for the loss of 135 lives in the Morbi bridge collapse. The conduct of the municipality, Pvt. firm and officials must be thoroughly investigated," read Kharge's tweet.

According to the official press release, the meeting aims to attract prospective investors and set up development agenda for the next decade. The three-day programme, being held from November 2 to November 4 in Bengaluru, would witness more than 80 speaker sessions.

The speakers include some of the top industry leaders like Kumar Mangalam Birla, Sajjan Jindal, and Vikram Kirloskar. Along with this, a number of business exhibitions with more than three hundred exhibitors, and country sessions would run parallelly, as per the official statement.
