Bengal believes in giving development humane face: Mamata at G20 meeting

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee says her government believes in giving development a humane face.

Speaking at a G20 meeting on finacial inclusion in Kolkata, where delegates from member countries have assembled for a three-day session, Banerjee says the state government has created 12 million jobs and increased Bengal's GDP manifold. She says development took place in Bengal as "we empowered women, farmers, MSMEs".

"We launched the 'government at your doorstep' (Duare Sarkar) programme to ensure that people get the benefits of our development initiatives. The programme won a national award," Banerjee says.

Pravasi Bharatiyas are 'brand ambassadors' of India on foreign soil: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described Pravasi Bhartiyas as the "brand ambassadors" of India on foreign soil and said they have a significant place in the journey of the country as it enters the 'Amrit Kaal' of the next 25 years.

"I consider Pravasi Bharatiyas as brand ambassadors of India on foreign soil. Your role is diverse. You are the brand ambassador for yoga, Ayurveda, cottage industry, handicrafts and also millets," Modi said, speaking after inaugurating the 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city.

"The GenNext Pravasis are also curious to know about the country of their parents' origin," he said.

The PM asked universities in India to document contributions made by the diaspora in their respective nations for the benefit of students. (PTI)

Noisy scenes in TN Assembly as DMK allies shout slogans against TN Guv, walkout

The first day of the Tamil Nadu legislation in 2023 turned acrimonious after allies of the ruling DMK, including Congress and VCK, shouted slogans against Governor RN Ravi and later walked out of the House. The members shouted slogans like, 'Long Live Tamil Nadu', and 'Condemn Governor'.

The members were sore at the governor after he recently called Tamil Nadu as 'Tamizhagam'. They questioned his right to suggest a different name for the state and accused him of unnecessarily interfering in state politics.

Delhi High Court asks a petitioner raising issues related to the sinking of Joshimath in Uttarakhand to check whether a similar plea is pending before the before the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Rohit Dandriyal mentioned his plea before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad for listing, which asked him to approach it again after enquiring about any such pendency in the top court.

NTPC denies project link to Joshimath subsidence but residents blame construction projects

Many residents of Joshimath in Uttarakhand have blamed power and road construction projects in the ecologically fragile region for the subsidence happening there. While the issues have been flagged by them for years, it is now that the situation has turned dangerous with most houses in th town developing deep cracks, 

However, NTPC has denied any project links to Joshimath subsidence, according to a report in The Indian Express.

“The tunnel built by NTPC does not pass under Joshimath town. This tunnel is dug by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) and no blasting is being carried out presently,” NTPC said in a statement.

India's national efforts towards 'Make in India' are neither isolationist nor are they just meant for the country alone, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday at a conclave of ambassadors. He also said that India does not believe in a hierarchical concept of a world order where a few countries are considered superior to others.

"India's international relations are guided by the very essence of human equality and dignity," the minister said. "We do not believe in making or becoming a client or satellite state, and so, when we partner any nation, it is on the basis of sovereign equality and mutual respect."

Delhi colder than most places in U'khand, Himachal for 5th day; dense fog hits rail, air traffic

Delhi saw cold wave conditions for the fifth consecutive day on Monday as very dense fog reduced visibility to just 25 metres, hitting road, rail and air traffic movement. The cold wave spell has been so intense that Delhi recorded a minimum temperature lower than that of most places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for five days on the trot.

The visibility levels dropped to 25 metres at the Palam observatory, near the IGI Airport, and the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says.

Around 29 trains have been delayed by two to five hours. And around 15 flights have been delayed and one has been diverted, officials say.

The Joshimath subsidence issue was brought up before the Supreme Court for hearing on Monday.

However, since the matter was mentioned out of turn, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud asked advocate Anjani Kumar Mishra to mention it in the mentioning list and bring it up on Tuesday.

Bombay HC orders release of ex-ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochchar, her husband

The Bombay High Court has ordered the release of former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar in a loan fraud case. The order is interim in nature, reports say.

The court said their arrest is not in accordance with the mandate of 41A of the CRPC, ordering their release. 

The CBI had arrested them last month in a case linked to alleged irregularities in an over Rs 3,000-crore loan provided to the Videocon Group when Chanda Kochhar was heading the private sector bank.

Brazil administration clear govt offices of protesters, at least 170 arrested

At least 170 people were arrested after supporters of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed government offices, CNN reported. Police said the authorities have taken control of three main government buildings -- the Supreme Court, the presidential palace and Congressional buildings.
 
According to the police, the government buildings involved in Monday's breach have been cleared of protesters. Executive secretary of the Brazilian Justice Minister, Ricardo Cappelli, vowed to punish all those involved in breaching the government buildings.
 
"I'm in the field, walking on the streets and personally commanding the security forces, fulfilling the mission I received from the President of the Republic. Nobody will go unpunished. The democratic rule of law will not be walled up by criminals," CNN quoted Ricardo Cappelli as saying.
