Goa guv objects to new Raj Bhavan plan; govt shelves proposal

The Goa government's proposal to construct new Raj Bhavan building met with an objection from Governor Satya Pal Malik, who said the plan should be put on hold till the coastal state's financial condition improves.
 

The state government has now shelved the project for a later date, an official said.
 

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had recently said that a new Raj Bhavan complex would be constructed in Goa and works like identification of land would be initiated soon.

Mevani alleges multi-crore scam in MNREGS in Gujarat village

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday alleged that a multi-crore scam has surfaced in a village in Banaskantha district of the state, in which bank accounts were opened in the name of around 500 villagers without their knowledge for the transfer of money under the MNREGA scheme, in order to siphon off the funds.
 

The Independent MLA said that the scam in Balundra village in Amirgadh tehsil came to light after some villagers, who were financially hit due to Covid-19, went to seek work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), but were told that their names were already registered under the scheme.

Religare fraud case: SC seeks Shivinder Singh's response on ED's plea against bail

The Supreme Court has sought a response from former Fortis Healthcare promoter Shivinder Mohan Singh on a plea filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against the Delhi High Court's order granting him bail in the Religare Finvest money laundering case.
 

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra on Friday issued notice to Singh and ordered status quo on his release.
 

"Until further orders, status quo with respect to release from jail be maintained and impugned judgment not to be treated as a precedent for any other case," the bench said.

Punjab hooch tragedy: Death toll rises to 39, two more arrested

The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Punjab rose to 39 on Saturday, as two more people were arrested in Amritsar for their alleged involvement in selling spurious liquor, a police official said.
 

The deaths took place in Tarn Taran, Batala and Amritsar districts of the state since Wednesday.
 

Two more people were arrested Saturday morning in connection with the incident, Inspector General of Police S P S Parmar told PTI over phone.

Assam to set up 40-member committee to analyse Centre's New Education Policy

The Assam government will set up a 40-member committee to initiate implementation of the Centrte's New Education Policy (NEP) in the state, a minister said on Saturday.
 

The panel, headed by the education department's principal secretary, will be set up by next week.
 

"The committee will submit its report by December 31 and by January we want to prepare the blueprint for implementation in the state," Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told a press conference here.

Soldier killed in Pak ceasefire violation on LoC in J&K

An Indian soldier was killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan troops on the line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Saturday.

Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Devender Anand said that Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation in the Rajouri Sector. "Own troops responded strongly to the enemy fire. In the incident, Sepoy Robin Kumar was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries."

Power consumption slump narrows to 2.64% in July; Likely to hit normal level in Aug

The slump in power consumption has narrowed to just 2.64 per cent in July at 113.48 billion units (BU) indicating spurt in economic activity and raised hopes that it would touch normal level this month.
 

Power consumption in July last year was at 116.48 BU, as per power ministry data.
