ByteDance offers to forgo stake in TikTok to clinch U.S. deal - sources
China's ByteDance has agreed to divest the U.S. operations of TikTok completely in a bid to save a deal with the White House, after President Donald Trump said on Friday he had decided to ban the popular short-video app, two people familiar with the matter said on Saturday. ByteDance was previously seeking to keep a minority stake in the U.S. business of TikTok, which the White House had rejected. Under the new proposed deal, ByteDance would exit completely and Microsoft Corp would take over TikTok in the United States, the sources said.

Preparations for the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya are in full swing. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will visit here on Sunday for the second time in a week to take stock of preparations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the Ram Temple here on August 5 after which the construction of the temple will commence in Ayodhya. Several dignitaries are expected to participate in the ceremony.

Fires in Brazil's Amazon up 28% in July, worrying experts
Fires in the Brazilian Amazon increased 28% in July from a year ago, a state agency reported Saturday. The National Institute for Space Research, which is responsible for monitoring Brazil, said it recorded 6,803 fires in the Amazon rainforest last month, compared to 5,318 in the same month of 2019. Environmentalists expressed concern at the rise because August traditionally marks the beginning of the fire season in the region. They fear Brazil could repeat the surge seen in fires last August, when 30,900 fires were recorded by the institute. The sharp increase in fires comes amid domestic and international concern over President Jair Bolsonaro's calls to clear land in Brazil's Amazon to drive economic development.
India to bring back 700 more Sikhs tortured in Afghanistan
India is preparing to bring back around 700 more Sikhs who are have been tortured in Afghanistan. These Sikhs will be brought back in several batches. After the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed, first batch of 11 Sikhs reached India on July 26. The first batch of returnees recieved a warm welcome by the BJP leaders at the airport. The first batch of the Sikh families are living in a gurdwara in Delhi. The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee is looking into the living arrangements for them.

China's Mars probe Tianwen-1 successfully carries out first orbital correction
China's Mars probe Tianwen-1 successfully carried out its first orbital correction on Sunday morning, Xinhua reported citing the China National Space Administration. The probe conducted the orbital correction at 7 a.m. (Beijing Time) after its 3000N engine worked for 20 seconds, and continued to head for Mars, the report said. Last month, China has declared successful the launch of its first Mars rover called Tianwen-1. The Long March 5 carrier rocket with the rover was launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on the southern island province of Hainan.
Uttarakhand to get snow leopard conservation centre
A snow leopard conservation centre will be set up in Uttarkashi forest division area, that will promote winter tourism in the state, officials said. On Saturday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat held a meeting with Forest Minister Dr Harak Singh Rawat and officials of the Forest Department in this regard. "The total number of snow leopards should be counted in the state, special efforts should be made to preserve and increase the number of snow leopards. In the last few years, the areas where snow leopards have been seen should be identified by the forest department by the cooperation of local people and military forces. These areas should be calculated by making grids," said Rawat.
UAE announces operation of 1st Arab nuclear plant
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the start-up operations of its first nuclear power plant in capital Abu Dhabi. The milestone achievement was announced through a tweet by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE prime minister on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. "We announce the UAE's success in operating the first peaceful nuclear energy reactor in the Arab world ... the work teams succeeded in loading nuclear fuel packages, carrying out comprehensive tests and successfully completing the operation," tweeted Sheikh Mohammed on Saturday.
