India-Bhutan border trade via Bengal suspended due to lockdown in Himalayan kingdom

Trade across the India-Bhutan border through Jaigaon in West Bengal's Alipurduar district was suspended after a lockdown was imposed to curb the rise in COVID-19 cases in the Himalayan kingdom, according to a PTI report on Wednesday.
 
The border gates between India's Jaigaon and Bhutan's Phuentsholing were closed after the total lockdown came into force in the neighbouring country on Tuesday, an Alipurduar district official said.
 
"Border trade through Jaigaon has stopped completely," he said.

Latest News LIVE: Ayodhya temple trust seeks donation from devotees

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust that is overseeing the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Wednesday made a formal appeal to devotees to make contributions for the temple, according to an IANS report.
 
In a series of tweets that include a video appeal by trust general secretary Champat Rai urged devotees to donate money for the temple construction. PM Modi had attended the 'Bhumi Pujan' ceremony and laid the foundation stone of the temple on August 5.
 
He said the Trust had received a number of mails and messages in which people have offered to make financial contributions for the temple construction.

Riot-hit areas of Bengaluru's Pulakeshinagar resemble war zone

Areas under Pulakeshinagar assembly constituency resembled a war zone on Wednesday, hours after after an unruly mob went on a rampage torching vehicles, irked over a 'communally sensitive' social media post allegedly by put up by a relative of a Congress MLA, according to a PTI report.
 
Charred vehicles, shards of glass from broken windows, stones and bricks lie strewn over the deserted roads of the violence-affected localities.
 
Earlier, three people were killed in police firing and scores of others wounded, including at least 50 policemen in the violence and arson that erupted in the city on Tuesday night and continued till the wee hours of Wednesday.

Congress condemns Bengaluru violence, questions police role

A day after the attack on its party MLA in Bengaluru, the Congress has condemned the incident and has questioned the role of the police in controlling the riots in which three persons died, according to an ANI report.
 
Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in a statement on Wednesday said, "Riots and arson are reprehensible, condemnable and unacceptable, and it is a complete failure of the law and order machinery and rule of law."
 
The Congress raised questions about the role of the police and the Yediyurappa government. Surjewala said, "Was the Yediyurappa government sleeping or waiting for violence to happen. And, why did the police not act in time? Who is responsible for the three deaths?"

Latest News LIVE: It took cops' firing to control Bengaluru riot, says senior police officer

It took firing by the city police, resulting in the deaths of three people, to bring the riot under control in Bengaluru, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.
 
"Due process was followed and firing happened and only then did the situation come under control," Central Crime Branch (CCB) Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kuldeep Jain told IANS on the violence that broke out on Tuesday night.
 
Jain spent the whole night at the riot-affected places and only returned at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Since the riots occurred in the night, mobilising additional police forces took some time.
 
"We tried to convince them but the mob was violent and started pelting stones on the policemen. Because it was late night, mobilising police forces took a little time," he said.

Pranab Mukherjee remains in critical condition, on ventilator support

Former President Pranab Mukherjee's condition remains critical following an emergency brain surgery two days ago, and he remains on ventilator support, the Army's Research and Referral Hospital here said on Wednesday.
 
"Presently, he is haemodynamically stable and on ventilator," the hospital authorities said in the afternoon. Mukherjee had also tested Coronavirus positive earlier.

Delay in action against person who posted controversial content triggered Bengaluru violence: Congress

Karnataka Congress working president Saleem Ahmed on Wednesday alleged that the delay in police action against the person who posted controversial content on social media had triggered violence in Bengaluru, according to an ANI report.
 
"A post was put up by a person on the social media but police did not take immediate action. The delay in action against the person who posted the content had created tension in the area. They should have taken immediate action who had posted this," Ahmed told ANI.
 
"Congress MLA immediately said that the person who posted the content had nothing to do with him. He condemned it," he said.
 
Responding to Karnataka Minister CT Ravi's claim that violence was "planned riot" and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) is behind it, the Congress leader said that it is totally irresponsible and wrong statement.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemns Bengaluru violence

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday condemned violence in Bengaluru over an objectionable social media post, according to an ANI report.
 
"The violence in #Bengaluru & the objectionable/offensive social media posts are highly condemnable. I appeal to everyone involved to not indulge in violence. I hope peace is strengthened," Owaisi tweeted.
 
Three people were killed and several others suffered injuries after violence erupted in the eastern part of the city on Tuesday night over a social media post allegedly made by Congress MLA Srinivas Murthy's nephew Naveen. 110 persons accused of arson, stone-pelting and assault on the police have been arrested in connection with the violence. Accused Naveen has also been arrested.
