S&P revises India's FY21 GDP contraction forecast to 7.7% from 9% earlier

S&P Global Ratings on Tuesday raised India's growth projection for the current fiscal to (-) 7.7 per cent from (-) 9 per cent estimated earlier on rising demand and falling COVID infection rates.

"Rising demand and falling infection rates have tempered our expectation of COVID's hit on the Indian economy. S&P Global Ratings has revised real GDP growth to negative 7.7 per cent for the year ending March 2021, from negative 9 per cent previously," S&P said in a statement.

The US-based rating agency said its revision in growth forecast reflects a faster-than-expected recovery in the quarter through September. For the next fiscal, it projected India's growth to rebound to 10 per cent. India's gross domestic product fell 7.5 per cent in the July-September quarter, against a contraction of 23.9 per cent in the April-June quarter. READ MORE...

No proposal from the BJP for cabinet expansion: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar

Expansion of the newly formed cabinet in Bihar will take place in due course in consultation with the BJP and the same was not on cards as of now, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said here on Tuesday. Kumar made the statement in response to queries about the intense speculations about a tussle between his JD(U) and the BJP coming in the way of expansion of the cabinet which has 14 members, including himself, less than half of the sanctioned strength.

As per the rule, a maximum of 36 ministers, including the chief minister, can be appointed to the 243-member Bihar Assembly.

"At present we are busy with moving forward on our blueprint for the next five years. A cabinet meeting is scheduled later in the day for the purpose. "When the BJP proposes expansion of the cabinet, we will think over it. So far no proposal has been received", Kumar told reporters.

They won't work nor allow anyone else to: AIIMS on nurses strike

Questioning the intent of protesting nurses of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) who are currently on an indefinite strike, the hospital administration alleged on Tuesday that the nurses neither want to work, nor would allow anyone else to work as nursing staff in the hospital. The administration also defended its decision of hiring nurses on contract basis as a part of their contingency plan to deal with the strike call by the nurses' union of the hospital.

"We have no plans of outsourcing nursing. It was only when they decided to go on strike and did not listen to reason that in the last two days we made contingency plans. According to them neither will they work nor allow anyone else to work," the statement by the hospital read.

Around 5,000 nurses of the premier health institute advanced their indefinite strike on Monday after they got to know that the institute has started to hire nursing officers on contract basis. The strike which started on Monday afternoon was scheduled to be observed from Wednesday among a long list of demands including clarity on salary structure and a freeze on hiring on contract.
