Locust control operations carried out in over 350,000 hectares area in 9 states so far: Agri Min
The Centre on Friday said measures to contain the spread of locust swarms have so far been carried out in over 350,000 hectares of area in states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Bihar.
On July 16 night, control operations were carried out in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, the agriculture ministry said in a statement.
SC refers to 7-judge bench issue of grant of remission to convicts by states
The Supreme Court on Friday referred to a seven-judge bench the issue whether states can grant benefit of remission to convicts under the Constitution by laying down a common policy and without scrutinising facts and materials of each case by the Governor.
The vexatious legal issue caught the attention of the top court, which, while hearing the bail plea of a murder case convict Pyare Lal, was told that he has now been released from the jail after being granted the benefit of remission by the Haryana Governor under Article 161 (judicial power of Governor to pardon a convict) as per a policy of the state government.
Another Cong MLA resigns in MP; 26 Assembly seats now vacant
Days after the resignation of Pradyuman Singh Lodhi, another Congress MLA in Madhya Pradesh resigned from the Assembly on Friday.
Sumitra Devi Kasdekar, who represents Nepanagar in Burhanpur district, submitted her resignation in person to pro-tem Speaker Rameshwar Sharma in the afternoon.
"I have accepted the resignation of the Nepanagar MLA as she insisted on resigning even after being given time to think over it," Speaker Sharma said.
Kasdekar could not be contacted for comment.
Assam flood kills 5 more; 36 lakh affected
Five more people died in flood-related incidents in Assam and around 36 lakh people across 28 districts are now affected, an official bulletin said on Friday.
One person each died in Dhubri, Darrang, Bongaigaon, Goalpara and Kamrup districts, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its bulletin.
More than 39.8 lakh people in 27 of the 33 districts in the state were affected by the deluge on Thursday, it said.

SC rejects appeal against Telangana HC verdict on demolition of secretariat
The Supreme Court Friday dismissed an appeal against the June 29 order of the Telangana High Court which had rejected the pleas challenging the state's decision to construct a new secretariat complex after demolishing the existing one in Hyderabad.
The state government had earlier indicated that the new secretariat would cost around Rs 400 crore and it had decided to equip it with state-of-the-art connectivity and other features.
A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan refused to hear the petition observing that the high court had dealt with the matter on merits.
Forex reserves climb $3.1 bn to record $516.362 bn
The country's foreign exchange reserves swelled by $3.108 billion to a record high of $516.362 billion in the week to July 10, RBI data showed.
In the previous week ended July 3, the reserves had increased by $6.416 billion to $513.54 billion.

NPS adds 100,300 subscribers in April-June quarter
Pension fund regulator PFRDA on Friday said National Pension System - a flagship defined contribution retirement savings scheme of the government - has registered about 1.03 lakh members in its subscriber base in April-June quarter.
During the period, nearly 1.03 lakh individual subscribers from the private sector and 206 corporates were enrolled, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) said in a release.
"While financial planning often took a backseat in an individual's life, this pandemic has brought it to the forefront, creating awareness for financial security at such testing times.

Some BJP MLAs in touch with Cong, claims Maharashtra minister
Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Yashomati Thakur on Friday claimed that some of the 105 BJP MLAs in the state were in touch with her party and there would an "earthquake" if their names were made public.
Hitting out at the opposition BJP over its "lust for power" and "dirty politics", Thakur said that Maharashtra has given a new formula to the country.
She also said that the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was stable.
In a video statement posted on Twitter, Thakur hit out BJP leader and former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying that he was surrounded by the people who are outsiders.
