IndiGo to lay off 10% of its workforce: CEO Ronojoy Dutta

IndiGo has decided to lay off 10 per cent of its workforce due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, its CEO Ronojoy Dutta said on Monday according to a PTI report.

"From where things stand currently, it is impossible for our company to fly through this economic storm without making some sacrifices, in order to sustain our business operations," Dutta said in a statement.

"Therefore, after carefully assessing and reviewing all possible scenarios, it is clear that we will need to bid a painful adieu to 10 per cent of our workforce. It is for the first time in the history of IndiGo that we have undertaken such a painful measure," he added.

Will take call on supporting Gehlot govt after there is clarity on floor test: CPI(M)

The CPI(M) on Monday said it will take a decision on supporting the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led government once it becomes clear when the floor test will be held in the Rajasthan assembly.

This comes days after Balwan Poonia, one of the two CPI(M) MLAs in the state assembly, pledged his support to Gehlot, who is embroiled in a power struggle with his former deputy Sachin Pilot. Poonia had told reporters at his residence here on Friday that he will vote in favour of the Congress government in case there is a floor test in the assembly.

"What is the necessity for the party to take a decision now about our support? There is nothing about a floor test as of now. We will take an appropriate decision when the floor test is held," CPI(M) state secretary Amra Ram told reporters. He said the CPI(M) will take action if any of its two MLAs disobey the party's decision.

Rajasthan CM Gehlot calls Sachin Pilot names, says he was 'useless'

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday called Sachin Pilot useless, using the Hindi word nikamma in a no-holds-barred attack on his former deputy with whom he is locked in a power tussle.

Referring to the dissident leader's tenure as the Pradesh Congress Committee president, Gehlot claimed that nobody raised questions for the sake of the party even when they knew that he didn't work.

We knew he is 'nikamma' (useless), he is 'nakara' (idle) and not doing any work, the chief minister told reporters, his choice of blunt words indicating that there is no chance now of a reconciliation between the two. Gehlot did not mention Pilot by name, referring once to him as his young colleague and recalling that the he had been given important posts by the party at an early age.

The chief minister claimed that Pilot used to say, Did I come here to sell vegetables? I came here to become the chief minister. He said Rajasthan was the only state where there had been no demand to change the PCC president over the last seven years, suggesting that this was to prevent trouble within the party.

Sachin Pilot petition is pre-matured, should be rejected: Abhishek Manu Singhvi

During the hearing in the Rajasthan High Court on a petition filed by Congress rebel Sachin Pilot and 18 other Congress MLAs against disqualification notices issued to them by the Assembly Speaker, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing on behalf of the Speaker, argued that the petition of the Pilot faction is pre-matured and hence should be dismissed.

The petition of Sachin Pilot faction is being heard in the Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court and a bench of Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice Prakash Gupta are hearing the case.

Arguing the case Singhvi said, "The Speaker has just given notices, not disqualified the MLAs. The Speaker's order can be challenged only on limited ground, so there is no basis in the petition filed by the Pilot faction."

"The Supreme Court in its decision on January 21 said that the Court cannot interfere in the powers of the Speaker, so why is this being debated?" Singhvi questioned adding "There cannot be a judicial review of the notice of the Speaker. The notice is not against the Freedom of Speech. Anti-party activities are political sins and also legally wrong," he added.
