In a first, Ladakh tableau to be part of Republic Day parade

A tableau from Ladakh will participate in the Republic Day Parade on Rajpath for the first time this year, informed Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh on Sunday.
 
Ladakh's tableau will depict the iconic Thiksey Monastery located on top of a hill in Thikse in Leh district, and is one of the most-visited tourist sites in the region. It will also feature the Indian Astronomical Observatory, located in Hanle near Leh.

Ladakh standoff: Indian, Chinese armies hold 9th round of military talks

After a gap of over two-and-half months, the Indian and Chinese armies on Sunday held another round of Corps Commander-level talks with an aim to move forward on disengagement of troops from all friction points in eastern Ladakh, sources said.
 
The ninth round of high-level military talks began at around 10 am at Moldo border point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, they said.
 
The eighth and last round of military talks had taken place on November 6 during which both sides broadly discussed disengagement of troops from specific friction points.

The Indian delegation at talks is being led by Lt Gen PGK Menon, the Commander of the Leh-based 14 Corps.
 
India has all along been maintaining that the onus is on China to carry forward the process of disengagement and de-escalation at the friction points in the mountainous region.

V K Sasikala 'conscious, stable', says Bengaluru hospital

V K Sasikala, the expelled leader of Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK party, is stable after being hospitalised for Covid-19. Her symptoms have reduced and she is now stable, said the Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru in a statement about the 66-year-old patient. "Conscious, alert and well oriented. Stable and comfortable, taking oral food normally and walking with support," said the statement about Sasikala, who is serving a prison term for corruption.

Pirates kill one, kidnap 15 crew of Turkish ship off W Africa

Pirates attacked a Turkish cargo ship off the West African coast, kidnapping 15 sailors and killing one, officials said Sunday. Turkey''s Maritime Directorate said the crew initially locked themselves in a safe area but the pirates forced entry after six hours. During the struggle, one crew member aboard the M/V Mozart died. Turkish media identified the victim as engineer Farman Ismayilov of Azerbaijan, the only non-Turkish crew member, according to the Associated Press.

Telangana schools for Classes 9 and 10 to open from Feb 1

After being suspended for nearly a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, schools in Telangana are set to open for Classes 9 and 10 students from February 1. The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations will be held from May 17 to 26 for academic year 2020 -21. "Every child who is willing to write the relevant exam shall be allowed to do so without insisting on minimum attendance and no such child will be withheld from writing the examinations on any ground," said the state’s school education department.

Delhi Police has given nod to farmers' tractor parade on Jan 26: Unions

The Delhi Police on Saturday gave permission to protesting farmer unions to hold their tractor parades on January 26 in the national capital, farmer leaders claimed.

The tractor parades will start from the Ghazipur, Singhu and Tikri border points of Delhi, but details will be finalised tonight, farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar said after attending a meeting between the unions and the police.

Kohar claimed that the Delhi Police has given its nod to the farmers' tractor parade on Republic Day in the national capital.
