Central team to visit Assam to assess flood damage

A six-member central team would arrive in Assam on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the monsoon floods that affected 57 lakh people and killed at least 113 people between May 22 and August 20, according to an IANS report on Monday.
 
Assam's Revenue Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary M.S. Manivannan said that the central team led by Sandeep Poundrik, Joint Secretary (Mitigation), National Disaster Management Authority, would visit some flood-affected districts to assess the damage to property, crops and various other assets including river dams.
 
"During the three-day visit to the state, the central team would hold meetings with senior officials of the Assam government and disaster management authority," Manivannan told IANS. He said that the Assam government has sent an interim flood damage report to the Centre and has demanded around Rs 2,300 crore as compensation for the tragedy.

Adani Group in talks to buy out GVK in Mumbai Airport

Billionaire Gautam Adani's Adani Group is in talks to buy out GVK and some of its partners in the Mumbai Airport as it aims to become the country's biggest private airport operator. Adani Group is in talks to acquire a 50.5 per cent stake held by GVK Group in Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) and another 23.5 per cent of minority partners, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), and Bidvest Group, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.
 
Adani Group had in March 2019 agreed to acquire 13.5 per cent stake of South African company, Bidvest for Rs 1,248 crore. However, GVK Group blocked thedeal claiming the right of first refusal. But GVK couldn't bring money to the table to buy Bid Services Division Mauritius' (Bidvest) stake and the matter went to court, news agency PTI reported.

NEET won't be held abroad, allow students to come via Vande Bharat: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to pass direction to the Central government to hold the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) Undergraduate (UG) 2020 examination in Gulf countries, but asked the government to allow students to come via Vande Bharat Mission flights to give the exams.
 
A bench of Justice L Nageswara Rao said that the quarantine norms are mandatory for students who would come from the Middle East countries to give exam but allowed petitioners to approach State authorities to seek relaxation.
 
The bench said the exam will be offline and the students who fly in will have to maintain the 14 days quarantine in view of public health. READ MORE...

Kerala Assembly passes resolution against leasing airport to Adani

The Kerala Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on Monday, demanding the withdrawal of the Union Cabinet's decision to lease out the international airport at Thiruvanthapuram to Adani Enterprises Ltd.
 
Chief Minister Pinarayai Vijayan moved the resolution and said the Centre should re-examine its decision and that the operation and management of the airport should be handed over to the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in which the State Government has stake.

He added that since the state government had agreed to match Adani's bid, the Centre's decision to privatise the airport cannot be justified. READ MORE...

PMAY scheme: House construction resumes after 12,000 people get first installment in J&K's Rajouri

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme, as many as 12,000 people have received the first installment of Rs 50,000 each in Rajouri district for the construction of their houses, according to an ANI report.
 
"We have set a target of 100 per cent coverage. To begin with, the first installment has been given to 12,000 people of the district," said Sushil Kumar Khajuria, Assistant Commissioner Development of Rural Development department, Rajouri.
 
"The PMAY initiative is supporting people here to build their own houses with the help of Jammu and Kashmir administration. It is a big relief for poor as they can live safely in Pukka houses," Khajuria said.
 
Earlier, there were some people in the district who could not build the pucca house of their own, Panchayat officer Abdul Khabbir said adding, "The orders issued by the Centre has given a push to the development."

Latest News LIVE: Death toll in Air India Express plane crash in Kerala rises to 21

A 37-year-old woman, injured in the Air India Express plane crash at the nearby Karipur airport on August 7, died at a hospital here, taking the death toll in the accident to 21,governmentsources said on Monday. The deceased, Manjula Kumari, died last night, the sources said, according to a PTI report. The woman had been to the United Arab Emirates to meet her husband early this year,but had to extend her stay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Eighteen people, including the pilot and co-pilot, were killed and several others injured when the flight from Dubai with 190 people onboard overshot the tabletop runway and fell into a valley. It had broken into pieces in the impact.
 
While a 53-year-old passenger succumbed to his injuries on August 22, a 68-year-old man, undergoing treatment for leg injuries, died of heart attack on August 17.

The Congress on Monday denied that Rahul Gandhi had accused any party leader of "colluding with the BJP", saying he "has not said" a word of that nature nor alluded to it, according to a PTI report.
 
At a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the party leaders who had written to Sonia Gandhi seeking several organisational reforms, including a collective leadership and dissolution of powers to the party's state units.
 
Sources present at the meeting said Gandhi was furious about the timing of letter and it being leaked to the media, and appeared to suggest whether these leaders were "colluding with the BJP".

Sonu Sood offers accommodation to 20,000 migrant workers

Actor Sonu Sood on Monday announced that he is offering accommodation to 20,000 migrant workers in Noida, according to a PTI report.
 
The actor, who was in the national spotlight for his work in helping migrants reach their homes amid the coronavirus pandemic, shared the news on Instagram. Sood, 47, also said these workers have also been provided jobs in garment factories of the region through their initiative Pravasi Rojgar.
