Farmers protest: Traffic snarls at border crossings as Delhi Police intensify checking

People coming to the national capital from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh faced traffic snarls at several border crossings as the Delhi Police on Thursday intensified vehicle checking in view of the 'Delhi Chalo' march by Punjab farmers against the Centre's farm laws. Farmers from Punjab are scheduled to reach Delhi through five highways connecting the city as part of their march.

 

Tension spiralled at the Shambhu border in Haryana, around 215 km from Delhi, on Thursday as police used water cannons and teargas to disperse hundreds of farmers coming from Punjab who broke barricades, throwing some into a river, determined to enter Haryana as part of their march.

 

Delhi Metro services from neighbouring NCR cities to the national capital have been suspended in view of the farmers' protest, officials said. However, metro services will be available from Delhi towards the National Capital Region (NCR) sections.

Haryana Congress leaders slam Khattar for using water cannons, tear gas to stop farmers' march

Haryana Congress leaders on Thursday slammed the Manohar Lal Khattar government for using water cannons and tear gas on farmers moving towards Delhi against the Centre's farm laws, saying the BJP-led dispensation should exercise restraint and hold talks with the protesters.

 

Senior Congress leader and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the farmers have the right to protest peacefully and by using water cannons and tear gas to stop their march, the state government is trying to muzzle their voice.

 

Speaking to reporters in Rohtak, Hooda said the government should not try to suppress the voice of the farmers. Water cannons were used against the farmers... The government should exercise restraint and hold talks with the agitating farmers and try to find a solution, Hooda, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, said.

Delhi Chalo march: Punjab farmers face water cannons, push through Haryana barricades

Farmers from Punjab faced water cannons and broke police barriers at the state's border with Haryana as they pushed towards the national capital Thursday in their Delhi Chalo march against the Centre's farm laws. At the Shambhu border, the Haryana Police and Punjab protesters in their tractor-trolleys faced each other off on a bridge over the Ghaggar River.

 

Police made announcements on loudspeakers to ask the farmers assembled on the Punjab side of the interstate border to disperse. As smoke from teargas shells clouded the air and security personnel milled around, people could be seen standing on top of trucks. The Haryana Police had blocked the Amritsar-Delhi highway at this border point with trucks to stop the farmers' tractor-trolleys, some of them laden with food.

 

Farmers chucked some barricades into the river. They were also seen pushing the trucks. A few protesters initially managed to cross the barricades on foot. Later, police eased the blockade, allowing the protesters and their tractors to proceed on the road to Delhi, 200 km away.

Delhi Metro services from neighbouring cities to remain suspended due to farmers' protest

Delhi Metro services from neighbouring cities to the national capital will remain suspended in view the 'Delhi chalo' protest march by farmers against the Centre's new farm laws, officials said on Thursday. However, metro services will be available from Delhi towards the NCR sections, they said. Taking to Twitter, the DMRC said, "From 2 pm onwards Metro services are available from Delhi towards the NCR sections. However, services from NCR sections to Delhi still continue to remain suspended due to security reasons till further notice."

 

On Wednesday, the DMRC had said trains would not cross borders of the national capital on Thursday till 2 pm due to farmers' protests. The farmers panned to reach Delhi on Thursday through five highways connecting the national capital as part of the protest.

 

The Delhi Police, however, said they have rejected all requests received from various farmer organisations regarding the protest and warned of legal action against them if they came to the city to hold any gathering amid the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

Farmers protests LIVE: Vigil stepped up at Delhi's bordering areas, vehicles being checked

Delhi Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers in the border areas of the national capital on Thursday and all incoming vehicles were being checked in view of the 'Delhi Chalo' march by Punjab farmers against the Centre's farm laws. Five sand-laden trucks have been stationed at Singhu border to stop tractors being driven by the protesters. Also, drones have been deployed for security purposes, police said.

 

While clarifying that the borders have not been sealed, officials said all pickets have been made active, while all vehicles entering the national capital were being checked.

 

According to officials, it was decided that Delhi Metro trains connecting the neighbouring cities in the NCR would not cross the national capital border till 2 pm on Thursday. As such, metro service was not available from Anand Vihar to Vaishali, New Ashok Nagar to Noida City Centre and between Sultanpur and Guru Dronacharya stations sections during the period. Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava visited the bordering areas and took stalk of the situation there.
