Punjab CM asks why Haryana govt stopping farmers from marching to Delhi

Punjab Chief Minister Captain (retired) Amarinder Singh on Thursday condemned the Haryana government's "forcible" attempts to stop farmers from marching to Delhi in protest against the Central farm laws. Urging the ML Khattar government to allow the agitated farmers to pass through the national highway to take their voice to Delhi peacefully, Singh questioned the need to stop them from proceeding, according to an official release by Punjab Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

 

"Why is ML Khattar government in Haryana stopping the farmers from moving to Delhi? The tyrannical use of brute force against peacefully protesting farmers is totally undemocratic and unconstitutional," he said, asserting that "the hands that feed the nation deserve to be held, not pushed aside."

 

Stating that the constitutional right of farmers to protest was being suppressed, the Chief Minister flayed the use of "brute" force by the Haryana Police, which had used water cannons and tear gas in a bid to stop the Punjab farmers from marching through the state and had not allowed farmer from Haryana to move out of their villages in many places.

Protesting farmers try to break through police barricades at Haryana's Sadopur border

Police used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse protesting farmers headed to Delhi as they tried to break through police barricades at Sadopur border in Ambala. The farmers were seen resisting the police, trying to break and drag the barricades at the Sadopur border following which police had to use water cannons and tear gas shells to control the crowd.

 

Police, earlier, had to use water gas to disperse the crowd of angry farmers pelted stones at security forces deployed to control the crowd at the Shambhu border.

 

Farmers have given a call for "Delhi Chalo" protest march, to coincide with the Constitution Day celebrations, against new farm laws. While the government says the three laws will do away with middlemen, enabling farmers to sell their produce in the commercial markets, protestors fear that this could lead to the government not buying produce at guaranteed prices, thereby disrupting their timely payments.

 

Farmers also gathered in Haryana's Karnal to protest against farm laws near the Karna Lake area.

Haryana cops use teargas, water cannons to block Punjab farmers from going to Delhi

Tension spiralled at the Shambhu interstate border on Thursday as police used water cannons and teargas to disperse hundreds of farmers from Punjab who broke barricades, throwing some into the river, determined to enter the state as part of their Delhi Chalo' march against the Centre's farm laws.

 

As farmers and police faced off at a bridge with the Ghaggar river flowing below, tractors and trucks were lined up and people could be seen waving black flags and shouting slogans. Police made announcements on loudspeakers to ask the farmers assembled on the Punjab side of the border to disperse. As smoke from the teargas clouded the air and uniformed security personnel milled around, people could be seen standing on top of trucks. Television visuals also showed some bricks lying on the road.

 

Some farmers tried to cross the barricades and remove them and some chucked them into the Ghaggar river. The Shambhu border point is about 200 km from Delhi.

The protestors were marching towards Delhi against new farm laws which they believe will reduce their earnings, making large retailers more powerful. Farmers' protest LIVE: Braving tear-gas shells, water canons, thousands break barricades in Haryana

Tens of thousands of farmers on Thursday practically rose up in arms as they braved tear-gas shells and water cannons, managed to break police barricades ahead of the Punjab-Haryana border in Shambhu near Ambala. Several protesters and policemen were injured.

 

The farmers broke barricades threw them down the bridge.

 

According to the All India Kisan Sabha, there are over 50,000 farmers at the spot.

 

Bracing overnight rains and chilly winds, thousands of protesting farmers have assembled at various places along the Haryana-Punjab borders amid mounting tension.
