Govt procures 151.17 lakh tonne paddy at MSP for Rs 28,543 cr so far this season

State-owned FCI and state procurement agencies have bought 21 per cent more paddy so far in the kharif marketing season of this year at 151.17 lakh tonnes amounting to Rs 28,543 crore. Paddy procurement for kharif 2020-21 is progressing smoothly in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala with purchase of over 151.17 lakh tonne up to October 25 against 125.05 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of last year.
 
Out of the total purchase of 151.17 lakh tonnes, Punjab has contributed 100.89 lakh tonnes.
 
"About 12.98 lakh farmers have already been benefitted from the ongoing KMS procurement operations with an MSP value of Rs 28,542.59 crore at a rate of Rs 18,880 per tonne," an official statement said.

SpiceJet to launch 8 new flights between India-Bangladesh under air bubble pact

No-frills carrier SpiceJet on Monday announced the launch of eight new flights between India and Bangladesh under the air bubble agreement between the two countries, starting November 5. The Gurugram-headquartered airline will operate four times a week non-stop flight services between Kolkata and Chittagong,besides connecting Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai with Dhaka, a release said.
 
Chittgaong, the port city, will be the 11th international destination of SpiceJet, it said, adding that all the new services will be operated from November 5.
 
On October 17, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri had announced, through a tweet, that the two South Asian nations had sealed an air bubble pact under which the carriers of India and Bangladesh will operate 28 flights (per week) each between the two countries.

India delighted to host US Defence Secretary, discussions will add new vigour to defence ties: Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday said that talks with US Defence Secretary Mark Esper were fruitful and were aimed at further deepening defence cooperation in a wide range of areas. In a tweet, the minister said that talks between the two countries will add new vigour to India-US defence relations and cooperation.
 
"India is delighted to host the US Secretary of Defence, Dr. Mark Esper. Our talks today were fruitful, aimed at further deepening defence cooperation in a wide range of areas. Today's discussions will add new vigour to India-US defence relations & mutual cooperation," he said.
 
The two leaders met on Tuesday ahead of Tuesday's 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue. Esper and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo are in India to participate in the India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.

Rupee falls by 23 paise to 4-week low on fresh coronavirus scare

The rupee depreciated by 23 paise to settle at around four-week low of 73.84 against the US dollar on Monday as muted domestic equities and strong American currency weighed on investor sentiment. The local unit opened at 73.77 at the interbank forex market and lost lost further ground to hit a low of 73.88 in the day trade.
 
The currency finally settled at 73.84 against the greenback, registering a decline of 23 paise -- its worst single-day decline in the past one month and the lowest closing level since September 29. The rupee had closed at 73.61 on Friday.

Supreme Court stays HC order to parties to go virtual for Madhya Pradesh bypolls

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Madhya Pradesh High Court order to political parties to campaign virtually for the November 3 Assembly bypolls in the state, but pulled up the parties for creating a situation that compelled the HC to act.
 
The top court stayed the High Court order, but noted that the situation would not have arisen if health protocols were followed in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic. A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar said: "Had political parties maintained the protocols, this situation would not have arisen."
 
Staying the High Court order, the bench also asked the Election Commission of India to take an appropriate decision in connection with political rallies as per the law in the backdrop of COVID-19 guidelines.

Latest News LIVE: India, US hold Defence Minister-level talks

A meeting between visiting US Secretary of Defence Mark T Esper and India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh started on Monday to discuss various issues. The talks at the South Block are part of the third edition of the 2+2 ministerial dialogue between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence Mark T Esper and their Indian counterparts, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
 
A host of crucial bilateral, regional, and global issues -- including China's efforts to expand influence in the Indo-Pacific region as well as its aggressive behaviour in eastern Ladakh -- will figure in the talks.
 
To further tighten the strategic partnership between the two countries, the last of the four military communication foundational agreements, Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement for Geospatial Cooperation (BECA), is expected to be signed with the US.
