BJP's 'political epidemic' to be defeated in 2021 polls: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday urged the student community to fight back the BJP's attacks, and vowed to give a "taste of freedom" to the entire country by defeating the saffron party's "political epidemic" in the 2021 Assembly polls in the state.
She also slammed the Centre over its decision to conduct JEE and NEET exams in September, and said the Union government's "adamant approach" will add to the COVID-19 woes as examinees may get infected by the virus while travelling to and fro examination centres.

The emphasis of the government is to have a modern, effective and sensitive security architecture that can inspire a sense of safety among all sections of the society, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday.
He said this in a message on the 50th raising day of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD). The prime minister's message was read during a webinar event held at the Union home ministry in North Block here that was attended by Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy and Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla.
The BPRD was raised this day in 1970 and it works as a policing think tank under the ministry.

Govt to appoint secretary-rank officer to head National Recruitment Agency
The Centre will appoint a secretary-rank officer as the chairman of the National Recruitment Agency (NRA), which will conduct online Common Eligibility Test to shortlist candidates for majority of central government jobs, a Personnel Ministry order said on Friday.
Besides the chairman, the NRA will have eight members -- a secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) or his representatives, representatives of the Ministry of Railways and the Department of Financial Services, chairmen of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) and the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS), and two experts from the field of academics, it said.
It will also have a Secretary and Controller of Examinations and the post will be held by an officer at the level of joint secretary to the government of India. The officer will be appointed on deputation basis, the order said.
Pandemic at its peak, don't hold NEET, JEE exams: Chhattisgarh CM
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday strongly opposed the Centre's decision to hold NEET and JEE entrance exams amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said it was not appropriate to conduct examinations when the pandemic is at its peak in the country.
Various opposition parties, including the Congress, have demanded that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) be deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic and floods in parts of the country, even as the Union government has made it clear that they will be held as per schedule with due precautions.

Heavy rains lash parts of MP, red alert issued for 6 districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert of extremely heavy rainfall for six districts of Madhya Pradesh amid incessant downpour that lashed large parts of the state.
Narsinghpur district received 353 mm rainfall in the last 33 hours ending 5.30 pm, the MeT department said.
Chhindwara and Betul received 95 mm and 75 mm rainfall, respectively, from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, said meteorologist S N Sahu of the IMD's Bhopal office.

The Union Home Ministry on Friday said the process of online nominations for the 2021 Padma awards, recognising distinguished and exceptional achievements and service in various disciplines, will be available till September 15.
The nominations or recommendations for the Padma awards will be received online only on the portal https://padmaawards.gov.in, a home ministry statement said.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Friday said 25,000 people will get direct employment opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir as three bamboo clusters will be developed in Jammu, Katra and Samba for making bamboo baskets, incense sticks and charcoal.
Singh, the Union minister for PMO and Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER), also said that a mega bamboo industrial park near Jammu and a bamboo technology training centre in the region will come up within two years of the allotment of land by the Jammu administration.
CISF launches mobile app for its pensioners
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Friday launched a mobile application for its pensioners as part of an e-office initiative introduced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said.
"The pensioners corner app will be available in both web and Android platforms with the facility for pensioners to access their data on the move."
"The new app will also have an SMS invitation system for the pensioners on important events happening at their nearest CISF unit," an spokesperson for the force said.
