Govt launches 'Swachh Survekshan 2021'; states also to be ranked

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday launched the 'Swachh Survekshan 2021' -- the sixth edition of the annual cleanliness survey -- and said the exercise this year will focus on wastewater treatment and other parameters.
 

According to the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, state ranking will also be announced under the survey, to be measured based on their fund utilisation and support to respective local bodies, among others.
 

At the event, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Puri said that every year, the 'Swachh Survekshan' is redesigned innovatively to ensure the process becomes more robust with focus on sustaining the behaviour change.

Eight UP policemen shot dead in failed raid

 Eight police personnel, including a DSP, were gunned down in a village near the city by a criminal's henchmen who lost two of them in a firefight later, officials said on Friday.

Seven others, including a civilian, were injured in the attack from a rooftop on a police team after it entered Bikru village past Thursday midnight to arrest Vikas Dubey, a history-sheeter who faces about 60 criminal cases.

50 million cubic litre water released for Mumbai: Minister

Maharashtra Minister Jayant Patil on Friday said 50 million cubic litre water has been released from Upper Vaitarna dam for Mumbai as demanded by the BMC.
 

Water Resources Minister Patil said there is enough stock in Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa dams, which supply water to the metropolis, and added Mumbaikars would not face any shortage.
 

The Upper Vaitarna dam is located in Nashik district, while Bhatsa is near Shahapur in neighbouring Thane.

BJP leaders hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ladakh on Friday amid a military standoff between India and China, with party president J P Nadda saying his "words give words to the emotion of 130 crore Indians and act as a great morale booster for our armed forces".

Deadline for furnishing TDS/TCS statements extended till July 31

The Income Tax department has extended the deadline for furnishing of TDS/TCS statements for FY 19-20, the department has also extended the issuance deadline of TDS/TCS certificates for FY19-20 till August 15.
 

"Understanding the current times that we are in, we have further extended deadlines. Now, furnishing of TDS/TCS statements for FY 19-20 extended to July 31, 2020," said the Income Tax Department.
 

"Issuance of TDS/TCS certificates for FY 19-20 extended to August 15, 2020," it added.

India briefs Japan on LAC situation, Tokyo says it opposes any change in status quo

Japan on Friday expressed hope for a peaceful resolution of the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese troops and asserted that it opposed any attempts to change the status quo on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
 
 
New Delhi has briefed Tokyo regarding the situation on LAC following a major showdown between Indian and Chinese troops last month in Galwan Valley area. Following the face-off, India had said that Chinese troops attempted to unilaterally change the status quo during the de-escalation.
