Latest News LIVE update: Death toll due to landslides in Kerala's Idukki district rises to 42
The death toll in the landslide at Idukki's Rajamala rose to 42, the district administration said on Sunday. "Death toll rises to 42 in Rajamala landslide incident after 16 bodies were found today," the District Collector of Idukki told ANI.
The last rites of the bodies recovered in the past two days were conducted on Saturday, the administration said.
Kerala Forest Minister K Raju is expected to visit the spot later on Sunday. The search operation is underway for the missing people in the landslide. On Friday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs to kin of the deceased.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot confident of proving majority in State Assembly
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday expressed confidence that he would be able to prove the majority when the Assembly session commences and said that all MLAs, who do not want the government to be destabilised, would emerge victorious whether they are in power or in the opposition.
"Our fight is a fight to save democracy, it will continue even after August 14 when the Assembly session will start. We will win and all those MLAs whether in power or in opposition who do not want governments to be disestablished will also win. I have written a letter to MLAs to listen to their conscience. We will win as people are with us," Gehlot said while speaking to media.

Amid tensions with China, armed forces push case for arming Israeli drone fleet with laser-guided bombs, missiles
Amid border tension with China, the armed forces are pushing a case for arming their Heron UAVs with laser-guided bombs, precision-guided munitions and anti-tank missiles for taking out enemy positions and armoured regiments. The proposal named Project Cheetah has been revived by the armed forces after being pending for a long time and is expected to cost over Rs 3,500 crores to the government.
"Under this project, around 90 Heron drones of the three services would be upgraded to be armed with laser-guided bombs, air to ground and air-launched anti-tank guided missiles," government sources told ANI.
The case is going to be considered by a high-level Defence Ministry body including Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar, who is now the in-charge of all capital procurements for the three services.

PM Narendra Modi releases Rs 17,000 crore to 8.5 crore farmers under PM-KISAN scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday transferred Rs 17,000 crore directly into the bank accounts of 8.5 crore farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme. He said the scheme has been successful in its objective to provide financial support to farmers without any involvement of middlemen.
The Centre provides Rs 6,000 per year in three equal instalments under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme that was launched in December 2018.
The prime minister "released the 6th installment under the PM-KISAN scheme of Rs 17,000 crore to nearly 8.5 crore farmers. The cash benefit was transferred directly to their Aadhaar verified bank accounts with the press of a button", an official statement said.

Air India Express plane crash: Mortal remains of 16 passengers handed over to families
Air India Express said on Sunday that the mortal remains of the 16 passengers who lost their lives in the Kozhikode plane crash had been handed over to their families, according to a PTI report.
The mortal remains of pilot-in-command Deepak Vasanth Sathe have already been taken to the Cochin International Airport, from where it would be taken to Mumbai later in the day, the airline said in a statement.
The mortal remains of co-pilot Akhilesh Kumar were cremated on Sunday "with attendance from all family members as well as with the officials of Air India and Air India Express present to mark respect to the departed soul at Mathura, his hometown", it said.
The flight from Dubai with 190 people on board, including a six-member crew, overshot the tabletop runway on Friday night while landing at the Kozhikode airport in heavy rain, fell into a valley 35 feet below and broke into two, killing 18 people, including both pilots.

Kerala plane crash: Congress leader wants responsibility to be fixed
Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Sunday demanded that Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri explain to the country the reasons for the Dubai-Kozhikode plane crash, and said anyone found responsible for the accident should be punished.
An Air India Express flight from Dubai with 190 people onboard overshot the runway at Kozhikode airport in Kerala on Friday and went down a slope before breaking into two.
Choudhury, in a video message from New Delhi, said the department should form a high-powered committee to probe the plane crash, which claimed at least 18 lives.
