Almost 86% of 417 million PMJDY accounts operative: MoS Finance
As many as 86 per cent of the accounts opened under the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) are functional. In absolute terms, as of January 27, 2021, as many as 417.5 million accounts have been opened under PMJDY, of which 359.6 million accounts are functioning, according to a written statement given by Anurag Singh Thakur, Minister of State (MoS) in Ministry of Finance, to the Loksabha.
Data shows, while the public sector banks have opened 404.8 million bank accounts under the PMJDY scheme, only 12.7 million bank accounts were opened by 14 private sector banks. The deposit balance in all these accounts totaled to Rs 1.37 trillion. Also, around 307 million RuPay cards have been issued to these accounts so far, indicating a widening of gap between the number of accounts opened under the scheme and the number of cards issued to these accounts. Passenger vehicle retail sales dip 4% in Jan after two months of growth
Retail sales of passenger vehicles fell 4.5 per cent year-on-year to 281,666 units in January 2021 from 294,817 units, in January 2020, after two consecutive months of growth. Key reasons attributed behind the drop include high base effect and shortage of semiconductors.
According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) passenger vehicles sales stood at 294,817 units in January 2020.
Two-wheeler sales declined 8.78 per cent to 1,163,322 units last month, from 1,275,308 units in January 2020. Commercial vehicle sales slipped 24.99 per cent to 55,835 units, from 74,439 units a year ago. READ ON...

Amid the farmers' protest along Delhi borders against the new farm laws, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will loot the farmers and take their land.
While addressing a public rally in Purba Bardhaman's Kalna, she said, "They (BJP) will loot the farmers and take their land. The farmers will be left with nothing. Farmers will sow and reap their crops and they will take away everything from them."
"When (BJP) they come to take your crops, say you (farmers) will not give them. Say you will reap the crops and eat food prepared from them too," the Chief Minister said.

India and Afghanistan sign agreement to build Shahtoot Dam in Kabul
India and Afghanistan on Tuesday signed an agreement to build the Shahtoot Dam in Kabul to provide drinking water facility in the Afghan capital. In a virtual summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Afghan counterpart Mohammed Haneef Atmar signed the MoU in the presence of Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While signing the agreement, President Ghani thanked India and PM Modi for the gift of water through the signing of an agreement on Shahtoot dam.
Speaking at the virtual summit, Ghani said, "With Shahtoot reservoir, we will be able to implement our vision of restoring natural beauty that captivated the imagination of Babur. I thank India and Prime Minister Modi for offering this gift of water, in addition to the gift of vaccines."

Haryana farmer dies after falling from tractor-trolley at Tikri border protest site
A 28-year-old farmer from Haryana's Rohtak district, who was providing voluntary services at Tikri border protest site, died after sustaining serious head injuries when he fell off a tractor-trolley, a PTI report said on Tuesday. Deepak was hospitalised at PGIMS, Rohtak where he died during treatment on Monday, Kuldeep Singh, SHO, Aasoda Police Station in Jhajjar district, said over the phone.
He said the accident took place at Bahadurgarh bypass road on February 5. Deepak was sitting in the tractor-trolley and distributing ration (to farmers sitting in protest at Tikri). He fell down and sustained head injuries. He died during treatment at PGIMS Rohtak.
