Six killed while disposing of explosives meant for quarrying in Karnataka; CID inquiry ordered
Six people were killed when the gelatin sticks they were trying to dispose of clandestinely exploded accidentally at a stone quarry site in a village in Chikkaballapur early Tuesday, police said. The government has ordered a CID probe into the blast.
Police said preliminary investigation indicated use of petroleum gel and Ammonium Nitrate in the quarry that was operating clandestinely and was closed a few days ago following raids. The incident comes close on the heels of a similar blast at a quarry site in Yediyurappa's hometown of Shivamogga on January 22, which left six dead.

LIVE: DAC approves proposals worth Rs 13,700 crore for armed forces
Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, has approved capital acquisition proposals of various weapons/platforms/equipment/ systems required by the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. Three Acceptance of Necessities (AoNs) for an overall cost of Rs 13,700 crore were accorded. All these AoNs are in the highest priority category of Defence Acquisition viz 'Buy [Indian-IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)].
All these acquisition proposals will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured. These will include inter-alia platforms and systems designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

First JEE exam under NEP kicks off in thirteen Indian languages
The JEE mains examination have commenced from Tuesday. This is the first time that JEE examinations are being conducted under the country's new education policy.
Under the new education policy, this time round, students are also appearing for the JEE mains examinations in Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Urdu, Odia, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarati languages, besides English and Hindi.

Gujarat local body polls: BJP leading in 58 seats, Congress leads 8
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 58 seats in the elections for six municipal corporations in Gujarat, while Congress has maintained a lead in eight seats, as per initial trends. The BJP is leading Jamjodhpur, Thaltej, Vastrapur, Asarwa, Saijpur, Nava Vadaj and Navrangpura wards in the local body polls.
On the other hand, Congress is leading in Dariapur and Chandkheda wards, while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is leading in Behrampura ward. The six civic bodies -- Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar -- were being ruled by the BJP. The counting of votes in Gujarat local body polls that were held on Sunday, had begun at 9 am on Tuesday.

Saradha scam: SC defers hearing on CBI plea to quiz WB ex-police commissioner Kumar
The Supreme Court Tuesday deferred by two weeks the hearing on CBI's contempt plea against former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar and others alleging non-cooperation by them in its probe into the multi-crore-rupee Saradha chit fund scam case, PTI reported.
The CBI, entrusted with investigating the Ponzi scheme cases in West Bengal by the apex court, filed the contempt plea on February 4, 2019 against Kumar, former Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De and state's DGP Virendra saying that it was not getting their cooperation in the ongoing probe.
The agency also sought cancellation of bail granted to Kumar and his custodial interrogation as he was "evasive during questioning". A bench comprising Justices S Abdul Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna deferred the hearing by two weeks as it has been conducting final hearing into the case related to winding up of six mutual fund schemes of Franklin Templeton.

Toolkit case: Shantanu Muluk moves Delhi court for anticipatory bail
Shantanu Muluk, who is accused along withDisha Ravi in connection with allegedly being involved in sharing a "toolkit" on social media related to the farmers' protest, Tuesday moved a Delhi court seeking anticipatory bail. The application moved by Muluk is likely to come up for hearing Wednesday before Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana.
Muluk had got transit bail from Bombay High Court on February 16 for 10 days.
He, along with Ravi and another accused Nikita Jacob, was booked for alleged sedition and other charges. Ravi was arrested by a Cyber Cell team of the Delhi Police from Bengaluru and brought to Delhi. Her police custody ends today. Muluk and Jacob are currently on transit bail.

Gujarat civic polls: Counting underway, BJP leading
Counting is underway for elections to six municipal corporations in Gujarat and the BJP is leading after winning 40 seats so far out of the total 576, the State Election Commission (SEC) said on Tuesday. The Congress has so far won nine seats, it said.
Polling for the 576 seats in 144 wards across six civic bodies - Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar - was held on Sunday. The BJP ruled all these civic bodies for last several terms.
The counting of votes began at 9 am on Tuesday. After three hours of counting, the SEC said the BJP has till now emerged victorious in 40 seats, including five in Ahmedabad, eight in Rajkot, four in Surat, nine in Vadodara, and seven each in Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.

Bharti Airtel ties up with Qualcomm for 5G rollout in India
Bharti Airtel said on Tuesday it would collaborate with U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm for 5G services to the world's second largest wireless market, Reuters reported.
The country's No. 2 telecom operator will use Qualcomm's Radio Access Network platform, which runs services on the cloud, to roll out 5G networks in the country, it said in a statement to stock exchanges.
India is yet to auction 5G airwaves, while telecom service providers globally are locked in a race for 5G roll out, which promises internet speeds up to 20 times faster than existing networks.

BJP leads in municipal elections in Gujarat
As the counting for the local body elections in six Municipal Corporations in Gujarat progresses on Tuesday, the trending figures show that the BJP is leading in majority of the seats, but it is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is giving surprising results in Surat.
The AAP party secured wins in two wards of the Surat Municipal Corporation in ward numbers 4 and 16. All its eight candidates won with huge margins over the BJP and Congress.
The BJP is leading in 141 seats, Congress in 40 seats, AAP in 16 seats and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) in four seats out of the 201 trending seats in the initial rounds. Results for the total 576 seats will be declared on Tuesday evening.
