The West Bengal government is contemplating a legislation to claim damage from political parties and individuals for damage to government property during bandhs and agitations.
"Since we are in government we are accountable to the people. We can't tolerate loss of public property by any political party or individual," Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters here on Thursday.
She said that the opinion of legal and constitutional experts and senior politicians would be taken on the issue.
Stating that in a democracy any political party had the right to call a bandh or an agitation, Banerjee said "Forcible bandh can't exist.
"It will be unwise to apply force on people on the issue. People can't remain silent. They must give a fitting reply. How long will this dirty politics continue?" she asked.
