Bombay HC dismisses PIL seeking action against Vice President Dhankhar and Union Law Minister Rijiju
The Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a public interest litigation filed against Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for their remarks on judiciary and the collegium system for appointment of judges.
The plea filed by Bombay Lawyers Association had claimed Rijiju and Dhankhar showed lack of faith in the Constitution with their remarks and conduct. It had sought for orders to restrain Dhankhar from discharging duty as the vice president, and Rijiju from discharging duty as cabinet minister for the central government.
Shutdown in parts of Srinagar on Afzal Guru's death anniversary
Parts of Srinagar city observe a shutdown on the 10th death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged inside Tihar Jail. Shops and other business establishments in Nowhatta, Gojwara and Nalla Mar Road areas were closed due to the strike called by banned JKLF.
However, private transport was plying normally all across the valley while the situation remained peaceful so far.
Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia says 14-16 cheetahs to be translocated to India
As many as 14 to 16 cheetahs are expected to be translocated to India in the coming months, Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday and asserted that the government is making holistic efforts for wildlife protection and sustainability.
While emphasising the importance of protecting nature for future generations, he also said there is no space for a linear economy now and "there is no place for Take, Make, Dispose model".
"Preserving wildlife and ensuring that it thrives is a very important part of our tradition as well as our treasure for us to maintain, develop and grow in a fiduciary role for the generations to come," Scindia said here.
Mahila Congress workers protest at Jantar Mantar against BJP, Adani
Scores of All India Mahila Congress members staged a protest at Jantar Mantar on Thursday against the Centre and Adani group over allegations of financial irregularities and market manipulation.
The women raised slogans and held placards demanding investigations into the matter.

PNB fraud: SC asks HC to decide in 4 weeks plea of CBI against nod granted to Mainak Mehta
The Supreme Court Thursday remanded back to the Bombay High Court for fresh adjudication in four weeks an appeal filed by the CBI challenging the nod granted to Mainak Mehta, the brother-in-law of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, to travel to Hong Kong.
Nirav Modi is an accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The CBI has alleged that Mehta received a large sum of money siphoned off in the PNB fraud scam and transferred them to his and his wife's offshore bank accounts.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman holds virtual meeting with IMF chief
During a virtual meeting with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that debt discussions will be at the forefront during the forthcoming meeting of the G20 Finance Ministers Central Bank Governors (FMCBGs) slated to be held in Bengaluru later this month.
India will continue to support the ongoing efforts for orderly and timely implementation of the common framework, the Minister said during the meeting.
Along with addressing debt vulnerabilities, Sitharaman and Georgieva also discussed the role of IMF and other relevant international organisations to develop a globally coordinated approach on the regulation of crypto assets.
RS Chairman rejects suspension notices on Adani row, AAP stages walkout
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday rejected the suspension notice given under rule 267 by Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh and Bharat Rashtra Samithi's K. Keshav Rao, following which the AAP staged a walkout.
Sanjay Singh said all the notices were rejected and alleged that the government was stalling the discussion on Adani row.
He had demanded suspension of business under rule 267 on Wednesday too, but the notice was rejected by the chair after which the AAP staged a walkout.
India records 109 new coronavirus cases, active tally down to 1,781
India logged 109 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases declined to 1,781, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.
The death toll stands at 5,30,748 with one death reported by Uttar Pradesh and one reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated. The Covid case tally was recorded at 4.46 crore (4,46,83,748).
UDF MLAs disrupts Kerala Assembly proceedings; House adjourned
Members of the opposition UDF on Thursday disrupted the proceedings in the Kerala Assembly over the Left government's refusal to roll back the budget proposals to levy cess on fuel and liquor sales, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day.
The ongoing session of the Assembly is scheduled to resume on February 27, Assembly sources said. As soon as the Question Hour began in the morning, a group of UDF MLAs trooped into the well of the House raising slogans alleging that the proposals in the budget to impose social security cess on fuel and liquor sales was nothing but "tax looting" and urged the government to withdraw it at the earliest.

ED makes fresh arrest in Delhi excise policy money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested advertising professional Rajesh Joshi in connection with its money laundering investigation into alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy, officials said Thursday.
Joshi was placed under arrest under the sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and his links with regard to alleged diversion of 'kickbacks' for the Goa assembly polls of last year are under the scanner of the agency, they said.
