Revenue Deficit Grant of Rs 9,871 cr released to 17 states

The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance has released 7th monthly installment of Post Devolution Revenue Deficit (PDRD) Grant of Rs 9,871 crore to the states on Monday.

With the release of this installment, a total amount of Rs 69,097 crore has been released to eligible States as Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant (PDRD) in the current financial year. Read more here

Stray violence mars near-total Maharashtra Bandh to protest Lakhimpur incident

Stray incidents of violence like stone-pelting at buses, private vehicles, burning tyres on roads to stop traffic and others marred an otherwise near-total Maharashtra Bandh, which disrupted normal life, here on Monday.

The voluntary shutdown call was issued by the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi allies -- Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party, Congress, CPI, CPM, trade unions, scores of farmers groups, students, women and other groups, barring the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and their constituents.

Considered an unprecedented move by a ruling alliance, the bandh is to protest against the Lakhimpur-Kheri massacre in Uttar Pradesh and express solidarity with the protesting farmers near Delhi and other parts of India.

Maharashtra bandh: BEST claims 8 buses vandalised in Mumbai, seeks police protection

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Monday said that eight of its buses were vandalised in different areas of Mumbai between midnight and 8 am today.

BEST further claimed that the buses were vandalised amid Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) Maharashtra bandh today in protest against the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that claimed the lives of eight people including four farmers.

BEST has sought police protection for the same.

According to Mumbai Police, security has been deployed at strategic points, with 3 companies of SRPF, 500 Home Guards, and 700 men from Local Arms units.

5 soldiers killed in gunfight with terrorists in J-K

Five Indian Army soldiers died in a gunfight with terrorists in a place called Dehra Ki Gali Poonch in district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, PTI reported. The fight broke out during a security operation in a village close to a mountain pass early morning, a Defence spokesman said.

Sri Lanka shelves plan to buy back $1.5 bn of sovereign bonds

Sri Lanka's central bank said on Monday it will halt plans to buy back $1.5 billion of its international sovereign bonds which are due for redemption next year due to a lack of interest from bond holders to sell at discounted prices, Reuters reported. Earlier in the month, the central bank had announced it would look to buy back international sovereign bonds (ISB) at discounted rates as part of a six-month road map to reduce short-term debt in a bid to boost investor confidence.
