MGNREGA allocation: Provision and demand not in sync, say experts

With the Centre increasing the allocation in the revised estimate for the current fiscal towards the flagship rural job scheme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Em­pl­oyment Guara­ntee Progra­mme, an expert said the allocation does not match with the overall demand of the scheme on ground.

 

“Though we saw an increase in allocation of NREGA, if you compare bud­geted estimates with revised estimates, as on February 1, 7.7 million household wanted work from NREGA have not been able to access work is telling you that budgetary allocation at this point of time don't match the overall demand for the scheme on ground,” Yamini Aiyer, president and chief executive of Centre for Policy Research said at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations’ (ICRI­ER’s)16th 5-Institute Budget Seminar 2022: Unpacking the Union Budget 2022-23, held on Monday. Early Facebook investor Peter Thiel to step down from Meta board

Facebook-parent Meta Platforms Inc said on Monday that billionaire investor Peter Thiel, an early investor who has been on the company's board since 2005, has decided to retire.

 

Thiel aims to spend time helping elect candidates who he believes will advance former President Donald Trump's agenda in the US midterms, the Congressional elections this year, a person familiar with the situation said.

 

Thiel, a co-founder of online payments system PayPal and a rare voice of conservative politics in Silicon Valley, became a Facebook investor in 2004, when he provided $500,000 in capital at a $5 million valuation for a 10% stake in the company and a seat on its board of directors. Read on...

Tata Consultancy Services bags electronic passport mandate from MEA

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has bagged -- from the Ministry of External Affairs -- the contract for delivering electronic passports (e-passports), according to sources. This deal is in addition to the second phase of implementing the Passport Seva Program, which the company got from the ministry.

 

Players such as Thales India and HP participated in this deal, which is expected to be of Rs 1,000-1,200 crore. Sources also said e-passports would start rolling out by July-August.

 

While the government will source the hardware chips, TCS will be responsible for their encoding. Read on...
