Cooperation Ministry formed to help farmers: Amit Shah

The BJP-led Narendra Modi government set up the Cooperation Ministry at the national level to help farmers on a large scale, the first Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday.

Addressing the inaugural function of the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Limited (CAMPCO) in Puttur of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, Shah said the achievement of the multi-state cooperative CAMPCO in this field is amazing.

The Union Minister said the CAMPCO, which started with around 3,500 members in 1973, now has 1.38 lakh farmer members and annual turnover of around Rs 3,000 crore. "This is a certificate for their dedication in the last 50 years," he said.

Amidst growing scale of the mutual fund industry, capital markets regulator Sebi has proposed to increase the role and accountability of the trustees in a bid to safeguard unitholders' interest.
 
In addition, the regulator has suggested to enhance the accountability of board of asset management company (AMC).

FM Sitharaman addresses central board of RBI, reviews economic situation

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday highlighted the key thrust areas outlined in the Union Budget and the expectations from the financial sector. She gave these directions while addressing the central board of directors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
 
The board also reviewed the global and domestic economic situation, and associated challenges, official sources said. It is customary for the Finance Minister to address RBI's board after the presentation of the Union Budget every year. Complimenting the Finance Minister on the Budget, the RBI board members made a few suggestions for the consideration of the government.

NDA govt successful in controlling terror in J&K, insurgency in northeast, left wing extremism: Amit Shah

The BJP-led government at the Centre has succeeded to a great extent in controlling terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir, insurgency in the northeast and Left Wing Extremism, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said here on Saturday.

Speaking at the passing out parade of the 74th batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) here, Shah said the central agencies, police of all the states of the country carried out a successful operation in a single day and achieved success by banning an organisation like the Popular Front of India (PFI).

He told the IPS probationers that a new approach is needed and the focus should be on the security of the country's economic centres, protection of human rights of the poor, evidence-based investigation, evidence-based forensic science, and cracking down on terror links of narcotics, cyber and financial fraud.

Over 13,500 houses connected with running water taps in Kargil: Govt

More than 13,500 households have been connected with functioning water taps under the centrally-sponsored Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Kargil district of Ladakh, an official spokesman said on Saturday.
 
The information was given at a meeting chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Wani as he reviewed the progress on JJM projects in the district, the spokesman said.
 
"Till January 2023, as many as 13,506 households have been connected with FHTCs in Kargil. In 2019, before the start of JJM, only 1,610 households in the district had tap water," the spokesman said.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani has said it is wrong to suggest that Islam came from outside and asserted that India belongs to him as much as it does to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

In his speech at the annual general session of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (Mahmood Madani faction) here at the Ramlila ground, Madani said this land is the first homeland of Muslims.

"To say and believe that Islam came from outside is wrong and is historically baseless. Islam is a religion of this country and is the oldest one," he said Friday.

Sri Lankan govt donates Ceylon tea to quake-hit Turkey

Sri Lanka's government has donated a consignment of Ceylon tea to earthquake-hit Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.

The consignment was handed over to the Turkish ambassador in Colombo by the director general for emergency response of the ministry on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the ministry.

The donation was coordinated by the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the ministry said.

Lithium reserve found in J&K's Reasi is of best quality: Official

The country's first lithium reserve, found in Jammu and Kashmir, is of the best quality, a senior government official said here on Saturday, as upbeat villagers expressed hope the discovery will bring them a bright future.

The 5.9-million ton reserve of lithium, a crucial mineral for the manufacturing of electric vehicles and solar panels, had been discovered in Reasi district by the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

"Lithium falls in the critical resource category which was not earlier available in India and we were dependent for its 100 percent import. The G3 (advanced) study of the GSI shows the presence of best quality lithium in abundant quantity in the foothills of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Salal village (Reasi)," J-K Mining Amit Secretary Sharma told PTI.

6.0-magnitude quake jolts off central Indonesia

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit off Indonesia's North Sulawesi province on Saturday, but did not cause any damage or casualties, disaster agency officials and weather agency said.

The country's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said the tremor of the quake did not trigger a tsunami, Xinhua news agency reported.

The quake happened at 15:55 p.m. local time with its epicenter located 37 km southeast of the Melonguane sub-district of Talaud Island and a depth of 11 km under the seabed, according to the agency.

India on Saturday dedicated to the people of Sri Lanka the state-of-the-art Jaffna Cultural Centre which was built with India's assistance and is a magnificent example of the bilateral development partnership.

The centre, whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2015, was dedicated to the people of Sri Lanka after a colourful cultural show that projected the diversity and richness of Sri Lankan culture.

Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan were present at the event.
