Ghulam Nabi Azad elected chairman of Democratic Azad Party

Former Chief Minister of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state Ghulam Nabi Azad has been elected the chairman of his newly formed Democratic Azad Party (DAP), a party leader said on Saturday.

A resolution to this effect was passed at a founder members session, which was held both in Jammu and Srinagar, the leader said, adding the decision was unanimous.

Azad, 73, who quit the Congress on August 26, launched DAP in Jammu on September 26 with the support of dozens of former ministers, ex-legislators and other prominent leaders, majority of whom also resigned from the Congress in his support.

Elon Musk unveils Tesla humanoid robot, may cost $20K

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has showcased a prototype of a humanoid robot that, for the first time, "walked without a tether on stage" during the company's AI Day 2022.

Named "Optimus", the robot has the same artificial intelligence (AI) software and sensors present in Tesla's advanced driver assistance system called 'Autopilot' and may cost around $20,000.

According to Musk, it was the first time it was working without "any support, cranes, mechanical mechanisms or cables".

Kabul terror attack: India condemns targeting of students at educational places

India on Saturday condemned the terror attack at the Kaaj Educational Center in Afghanistan's capital Kabul that resulted in the death and injury of more than 60 people, many of whom were students.

Friday's blast follows many recent attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure across Afghanistan, including in religious minority communities.

"We are saddened by yesterday's terror attack at the Kaaj Educational Center in Dasht-e-Barchi, Kabul and extend our condolences to the families of the victims. Indian strongly condemns the continued targeting of innocent students at educational places," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

India reports 3,805 new Covid-19 cases, death toll climbs to 528,655

India saw a single day rise of 3,805 new coronavirus infections, taking India's tally of COVID-19 cases to 44,591,112, while the active cases declined to 38,293, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Saturday.

The death toll climbed to 528,655 with 26 fatalities, which include 13 deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The active cases comprise 0.09 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.73 per cent, the health ministry said.

A decline of 1,290 cases has been recorded in the active caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.29 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was 1.39 per cent, according to the health ministry.

The number of recoveries surged to 4,40,24,164, while the case fatality rate was 1.19 per cent.

NGT asks panel to inspect river pollution allegedly caused by U'khand ashram

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed a joint committee to look into a plea alleging pollution in Uttarakhand's Bhagirathi river caused by an ashram engaging in the commercial manufacture of soap.

In the plea, applicant Madan Singh Gusain said that Arya Vihar Ashram, situated on the banks of the river and running the soap manufacturing unit, is discharging untreated effluent in Eco-Sensitive Zone.

It has no Environmental Clearance or consent from the competent statutory regulators under the provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the applicant alleged.

Cong prez polls: Tharoor to start his campaign from Nagpur today, to visit Deekshabhoomi

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will start his campaign for the party president's election by visiting the Deekshabhoomi monument here on Saturday.

Tharoor will pay his tributes at Deekshabhoomi, where Dr B R Ambedkar converted to Buddhism along with his followers in 1956, on Saturday, said Maharashtra Congress leader Ashish Deshmukh.

Deshmukh has organised the Thiruvananthapuram MP's visit here.

Tharoor, 66, filed his nomination for the Congress president's election in Delhi on Friday.

Rain delays Rahul's Bharat Jodo Yatra on day 24

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' on Saturday delayed due to rains in Karnataka.

The march on its second day in the state was affected by the torrential rains in Gundlupet.

According to the Congress party sources, the Yatra was supposed to start at 6.30 am on Thondavadi in Chamarajanagar district on Saturday.

The Indian National Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, "The 24th day of #BharatJodoYatra that was to start from Begur at 6:30am has been delayed due to rains. The rains arrived after a gap of 15 days and will benefit farmers. This is exactly what the Yatra is for, directly or indirectly!"

Centre extends AFSPA in 9 districts of Nagaland for 6 months

The Central government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in nine districts of Nagaland including Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren and Zunheboto from Saturday (October 1) to March 30 next year, according to a notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

In addition, the Government of India has also extended AFSPA in the areas falling within the jurisdiction of 16 police stations in four districts of Nagaland including five police stations in Kohima district; six police stations in Mokokchung district; Yanglok police station in Longleng district; and four police stations in Wokha district.

These 16 police stations comprise Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza and Kezocha police stations in the Kohima district; Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-l, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki 'C' police stations in Mokokchung district; Yanglok police station in Longleng district; and Bhandari, Champang, Ralan and Sungro police stations in Wokha district.

US imposes new sanctions on Russia as Moscow annexes Ukrainian regions

US President Joe Biden's administration has imposed fresh sanctions on Russia in response to Moscow's formal annexation of four occupied regions in Ukraine, a move that has sparked international condemnation.

Among the punitive measures announced on Friday by three cabinet-level departments were those from the Department of the Treasury that designated "14 persons in Russia's military-industrial complex, including two international suppliers, three key leaders of Russia's financial infrastructure, immediate family members of some of senior Russian officials, and 278 members of Russia's legislature" for enabling the referendums that resulted in Moscow claiming the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia as Russia's sovereign territory, reports Xinhua news agency.

"The Treasury Department and US government are taking sweeping action today to further weaken Russia's already degraded military industrial complex and undermine its ability to wage its illegal war," said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

India foils China's attempt to bring resolution against AUKUS at IAEA

India's deft diplomacy at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) forced China to withdraw its resolution against the AUKUS.

According to sources, the "General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held in Vienna from September 26-30, 2022. China tried to get a resolution passed against the AUKUS for seeking to provide Australia with nuclear-powered submarines (but armed with conventional weapons).

China argued that this initiative was in violation of its responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). It also criticized the role of the IAEA in this regard.

Hurricane Ian to cost US insurers $63 bn, says risk modeler

Hurricane Ian will cost private US insurers $63 billion in claims and will cause the largest storm-related losses in Florida’s history, according to an estimate from a risk-modeling firm.
 
The forecast includes losses to residential, commercial and industrial properties as well as automobiles, Karen Clark & Co. said Friday in a report. Previous estimates cited by industry analysts put damages around $30 billion to $40 billion.

PM Narendra Modi to launch 5G services in India today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday launch the 5G telephony services, ushering in an era of ultra high-speed internet on mobile phones.

According to an official release, 5G will be launched by the Prime Minister in select cities on Saturday and it will progressively cover the entire country over the next couple of years.

The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach $450 billion by 2035.

Capable of supporting ultra-high-speed internet, the fifth generation or 5G service is expected to unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits, serving as a transformational force for Indian society.

The three major telecom operators of the country will demonstrate one use case each in front of the Prime Minister to show the potential of 5G technology in India.
