Covid cases spike in Germany after Oktoberfest

Since the start of the Oktoberfest celebrations in September in Germany's Bavaria, the seven-day incidence of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people has been on a steady increase in and around the state capital Munich, local authorities said.

The incidence rate in the state has nearly tripled to 818, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said on Friday.

At the federal level, the incidence rate has doubled to 577.5 over the same period, Xinhua news agency reported citing the RKI as saying.

Thane records 51 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 292

With the addition of 51 coronavirus positive cases, the infection count in Maharashtra's Thane district has gone up to 745,334, a health official said on Saturday.

With these cases reported on Friday, there are now 292 active cases in the district.

As nobody succumbed to the infection during the day, the death toll remained unchanged at 11,962 and the count of recoveries has reached 733,797, he added.

UNGA adopts resolution on solidarity with flood-hit Pakistan

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on solidarity with and support for Pakistan in the wake of the recent devastating floods that has so far killed at least 1,700 people and led to losses worth $40 billion.

The resolution, adopted on Friday by consensus, urges the international community, in particular donor countries, international financial institutions and relevant international organisations, as well as the private sector and civil society, to extend full support and assistance to the Pakistani government in its efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts of the floods and to meet the medium- and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction needs, reports Xinhua news agency.

It calls on the international community to scale up its humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation of Pakistan, in order to repair and strengthen the country's prospects for achieving sustainable development, and encourages member states, the UN, and humanitarian organisations to continue to work together to address the different needs of affected populations, particularly the most vulnerable.

Hackers steal over $100 mn from top crypto exchange Binance

World's largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance has confirmed that hackers have stolen more than $100 million from its platform.

The Binance Blockchain, also known as BNB Chain, said that a total of 2 million BNB tokens -- worth nearly $568 million -- were initially stolen by the hacker.

However, the company suspended the BMB Chain which resulted in more than $100 million being vanished, while the rest of the tokens couldn't be transferred by the cybercriminals.

The Indian Air Force on Saturday began celebrations to mark its 90 years of foundation at the Sukhna Lake.

This is the first time that the annual parade and fly-past is being held outside Delhi-NCR.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh wished the force early this morning.

"Greetings and best wishes to all courageous IAF air warriors and their families on the Indian Air Force Day. The IAF is known for its valour, excellence, performance and professionalism. India is proud of its men and women in blue. Wishing them blue skies and happy landings," Singh tweeted.

Canada adds 21,000 jobs in September

Canada added 21,000 jobs in September with a high employment rate for core-aged parents, the national statistical agency said.

Statistics Canada said on Friday that after dropping in August, employment was little changed in September with both full-time and part-time work holding steady, Xinhua news agency.

It added that compared with May 2022, when employment last increased, there were 92,000 fewer people working in September.

India logs 2,797 fresh Covid cases, death toll climbs to 528,778

India on Saturday logged 2,797 fresh COVID-19 infections that pushed its tally to 44,609,257, while the number of active cases dropped below 30,000 after 122 days, according to Union health ministry data.
 
The death toll climbed to 528,778 with 24 fatalities including 12 reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.
 
There are 29,251 active COVID-19 cases in India which comprise 0.07 per cent of the total infections. The national recovery rate has increased to 98.75 per cent, the ministry said.
 
A decline of 1,111 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.
 
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.05 per cent. The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.30 per cent, the ministry said.

Delhi Excise Policy scam: ED seizes Rs 1 cr from bizman's house

In connection with the Delhi Excise Policy scam, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized Rs 1 crore from the house of a businessman in the national capital, sources said on Saturday.

Following the seizure of the cash, the ED will now call him to join the investigation, the sources said without providing any further details.

The businessman's house was searched as the probe agency on Friday conducted day-long raids at more than 35 locations across Punjab, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh.

Several parts of Mumbai faced waterlogging due to incessant heavy rainfall on Saturday morning.

"Generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain/thundershower in the city and suburbs in the next 24 hours," said the India Meteorological Department on Saturday morning.

"Isolated heavy falls & thunderstorms/lightning very likely over Gujarat Region 07th-10th; Madhya Maharashtra and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam from 07th-09th; Marathwada on 7th & 9th; Konkan & Goa and Telangana on 07th; Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 07th-11th; North Interior Karnataka, during 07th,09th & 10th; South Interior Karnataka during 9th - 11th; Kerala on 9th & 10th October 2022," the IMD further added.

Maharashtra: 10 dead, 24 injured after bus hits truck, catches fire

Ten persons were killed and 24 injured after a bus hit a truck and caught fire in Maharashtra's Nashik city early Saturday, police said.

The accident took place on Aurangabad Road around 5 am, an official said.

The private bus, a 'sleeper' coach, had around 30 passengers. It hit the truck at Nandur Naka and caught fire in a few minutes, the official said.

Shah, Nadda to inaugurate BJP office in Guwahati, address rally

Union Home Minister and BJP president JP Nadda will inaugurate the party's newly-constructed state office at Beltola in the Assam capital and address a rally of party workers on Saturday, according to their scheduled programmes.

Nadda will depart from the state after that, while Shah will proceed to hold a meeting on narcotics with the chief ministers, chief secretaries and director-generals of police of the Northeastern states.

The Union minister, who is on a three-day visit to Assam from Friday, will also chair a review meeting on the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) in the evening.

Russians have started preparing society for possible use of nukes: Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksyy believes that Russian officials have started "preparing the society" for the possible use of nuclear weapons, but also added that "they are not ready to do it".

In an interview with the BBC at the President's Office in Kiev, Zelensky said on Friday: "They begin to prepare their society. That's very dangerous.

"They are not ready to do it, to use it. But they begin to communicate. They don't know whether they'll use or not use it. I think it's dangerous to even speak about it."

"What we see is that Russia's people in power like life and thus I think the risk of using nuclear weapons is not that definite as some experts say, because they understand that there is no turning back after using it, not only the history of their country, but themselves as personalities."

AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Bhagwant Mann on two-day Gujarat visit from today

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann will begin their two-day visit to poll-bound Gujarat from Saturday.

Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders will jointly address a public meeting at Dahod town in tribal-dominated Dahod district on Saturday, the party's state general secretary Manoj Sorathiya said.

Later in the day, they will participate in a 'Tiranga Yatra' in Vadodara city, he said.

On Sunday, they will address a public meeting at Dharampur in tribal-dominated Valsad district, and then at Kadodara in Surat district.
