Ukraine urges UN to suspend Russia from top rights body

Ukraine's UN ambassador urged members of the United Nations on Thursday to suspend Russia from the world organization's leading human rights body, saying it has committed horrific human rights violations and abuses that would be equated to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
 
Sergiy Kyslytsya introduced the U.S.-initiated resolution before the 193 members of the General Assembly vote.
 
Russia's actions are beyond the pale, he said. Russia is not only committing human rights violations, it is shaking the underpinnings of international peace and security. Russia's deputy ambassador Gennady Kuzmin urged members to vote no.

799 projects worth Rs 2,952 crore taken up by states to eliminate waterlogging points: Govt

The states and Union territories have taken up nearly 800 projects worth Rs 2,952 crore to eliminate 3,770 waterlogging points under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the government informed Parliament on Thursday.
 
A total of 633 projects worth Rs 1,180 crore have so far been completed, which has resulted in the elimination of around 2,300 waterlogging points in the states and Union territories, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA) ministry said in a statement, quoting a written reply by Minister of State Kaushal Kishore to a question in the Lok Sabha.
 
The statement said to complement the efforts of the states, AMRUT, which is being implemented by the ministry in 500 cities and towns across the country, focusses on the development of basic urban infrastructure, including sewerage and septage management, and storm-water drainage.

NIA conducts raids at 11 places in Jammu and Kashmir

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday carried out raids at 11 places in the Kashmir Valley in connection with a case related to the activities of 'The Resistance Front' (TRF) -- a front outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), officials said.
 
"The NIA conducted searches at 11 places today including 6 locations in district Srinagar, 2 in Baramulla and one each in Awantipora (Pulwama), Budgam and Kulgam," an official said.
 
The locations searched include the house of active militant, Basit Ahmad Dar against whom the NIA recently announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh. The case relates to the activities of TRF, and its self-styled commander, Sajjad Gul, who has been actively radicalising, motivating and recruiting the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi likely to visit Gujarat later this month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Gujarat for two days later this month during which he is expected to take part in various official and political programmes, sources said on Thursday. During his trip, Modi is likely to visit the tribal-dominated district of Dahod.
 
This will be the prime minister's second visit to Gujarat in little over a month.
 
Modi had visited the state on March 11, a day after the results of assembly elections in five states were declared. The BJP had won four of the five states, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stormed to power in Punjab.

India refuses to comment on political turmoil in Pakistan, says it's an 'internal matter'

India on Thursday declined to comment on the political turmoil in Pakistan saying it is an "internal matter" of that country but noted that it is keeping an eye on the developments in Islamabad.
 
"It is their internal matter. I do not have any comment to make on this. We are keeping an eye on it but we do not comment on internal matters (of any country)," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.
 
At a media briefing, he was asked to comment on the political developments in Islamabad. Pakistan witnessed political upheaval after the deputy speaker of the country's parliament on Sunday blocked a no-confidence motion against beleaguered Prime Minister Imran Khan.
