India records 109 new Covid-19 infections, tally of active cases now 1,842

India has recorded a single-day rise of 109 new COVID-19 infections and its count of active cases now stands at 1,842, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.07 per cent and the weekly positivity was pegged at 0.08 per cent, as per the data.

2024 H-1B visas for skilled professionals to open from March 1: US

The USCIS will assign a confirmation number to each registration submitted for the FY 2024 H-1B cap, which can be used to track registrations. The number, however, cannot be used to track one's case status in Case Status Online, the USCIS said in a release.
 
All prospective H-1B cap-subject petitioners are required to use a myUSCIS online account to register each beneficiary electronically for the selection process.
 
They also need to pay a $10 fee for each registration submitted on behalf of each beneficiary.
 
Registrants, i.e., U.S. employers and agents will use a registrant account and they will be able to create new accounts from February 21.

NIA to take Mangaluru cooker blast accused into custody

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to take Mangaluru cooker blast accused Mohammed Shariq into custody following his recovery, sources privy to the case said.
 
Shariq, who was undergoing treatment in the Victoria Hospital here for burn injuries, is learnt to have recovered from the injuries.
 
Following his recovery, the NIA has decided to take him into custody for questioning, the sources said.

In a resolution passed at a roundtable organised by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) on Saturday, experts termed as "inadequate" the steps taken to deal with the prevailing situation in subsidence-hit Joshimath.
 
They also asked the government to consider taking long-term measures to address the problem, saying a similar situation may arise in Nainital, Mussoorie and other areas of Garhwal as well if the "so-called development driven by human greed" is not checked in the hill state.
 
"Declare Himalayas as an eco-sensitive zone. Regulate big projects causing devastation," the resolution said.

BJP releases list of 54 candidates for Tripura Assembly elections on Feb 16

The BJP has announced the names of its 54 candidates for the February 16 Tripura Assembly polls, fielding Chief Minister Manik Saha from Town Bordowali and Union minister Pratima Bhoumik from Dhanpur again.
 
Party leaders Anil Baluni and Sambit Patra named 48 candidates at a press conference at the BJP headquarters here and another list of six more was released later. The seats included some where the party's ally and tribal outfit Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) had contested last time.

Fast-track talks underway in Ukraine for long-range missiles, planes

Ukraine and its Western allies are engaged in fast-track talks on the possibility of equipping the invaded country with long-range missiles and military aircraft, a top Ukrainian presidential aide said.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Ukraine's supporters in the West understand how the war is developing and the need to supply planes capable of providing cover for the armoured fighting vehicles that the United States and Germany pledged at the beginning of the month.
 
However, in remarks to online video channel Freedom, Podolyak said that some of Ukraine's Western partners maintain a conservative attitude to arms deliveries, due to fear of changes in the international architecture.

India has seen a huge transformation in the last eight to nine years and the country will be a leading power after it becomes 'atmanirbhar' (self reliant), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said. In Pune to launch 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way', the EAM said the aim was to get people to associate with the nation's foreign policy and not just listen to the "mandarins" (a term generally used for powerful bureaucrats).

He also spoke on China and the challenges the country faces with the ambitious northern neighbour as well as India's ties with Japan and the role in the Indo-Pacific.
