Laxman Hembram, a 17 year old year tribal student from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), has been selected to participate in the Malala Day United Nations Youth Assembly to be held at United Nations headquarters in New York on July 12.
Hembram, an aspiring engineer, is the only young representative from India to attend the event at the UN headquarters.
The Malala Day United Nations Youth Assembly coincides with the 16th birthday of Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani activist and a courageous advocate of universal education and girls' rights.
"I will highlight, in my presentation, how education can be made accessible for all, especially, for the underprivileged ones. How they (referring to the tribal students) can be brought to the mainstream", said an elated Hembram.
The global community will come together on July 11 and 12 to celebrate Malala Day to highlight the leading role that youth can play in enabling all children to get education. Among others, Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General will attend the event.In another achievement, Amrita Nayak, another tribal student from KISS studying in +2 Science, is selected among 13 student-panelists from India for taking part in Ground Level Panel (GLP) to discuss and comment on the recommendations of a United Nations High Level Panel (HLP) on post-2015 goals framework of Millennium Development Goals (MDP) to be held at New Delhi from July 14-19.
