Maharashtra BJP president Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis demanded the immediate scrapping of the local body tax (LBT) today and said that Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan was making it a prestige issue.

The Maharashtra unit of the BJP has already extended support to the ongoing strike by traders who are opposed to the LBT and Fadnavis visited a gathering of members of business community in city today to extend his support.

He said that the entire state was affected by LBT and the government seemed to be adamant about the issue. He also assured them that if the BJP comes to power in Maharashtra, it would cancel the LBT.

Trading activities in Nagpur, along with other cities like Mumbai, Pune and other places have been affected due to the strike, due to stiff opposition to LBT.

Political parties are also divided on the issue. While the Congress led by Pradesh Congress Committee President Manikrao Thakre has stood solidly behind Chavan, some NCP units have opposed it, political sources said.
