Malegaon blast case: Special court drops charges against 8 accused

On Monday, the eight accused in 2006 Malegaon bomb blast case discharged by Special Mumbai Court as reported by Press Trust of India.

A bench of justice V V Patil dropped charges against nine accused, out of which 1 is dead, six are out on bail and two are convicted.

On Sepetember 21 last year, the union government rubbished in the Supreme Court allegations that sacked Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian was asked to "go soft" on the accused in the Malegaon blasts case.

News agency Press Trust of India was quoted Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi in the court as saying: "The main allegation is that the prosecutor was asked to go soft. I myself have examined the papers. There is no truth in it". The attorney general appeared for the Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
 
Earlier on Sepetember 11 last year, the Supreme Court on issued notices to the Centre, the NIA and the Maharashtra government on plea against removal of the public prosecutor, Rohini Salian, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The petition, filed by Nisar Ahmed, the father of a blast victim, and activist Harsh Mander, said the Union home ministry, which runs NIA, had been trying to pressure “an honest prosecutor to go soft” on the accused.

On September 8 2006, three blasts in a mosque, a graveyard and a bustling market, where ripped through Malegaon in the afternoon which killed 37 people and injured more than 100.
