Around June last year, during the time she was putting together her first non-fiction novel, Sreemoyee Piu Kundu shared on social media that some of the people she had interviewed wanted to back out. They were worried about the backlash they thought might follow if their stories were made public, even if their names were kept in the shadows.
Soon after Kundu’s post, new messages began to flood her inbox. One of the many who came forward to fill in the gaps was a 33-year-old single mother who had left her alcoholic husband to start life anew with her daughter.
