Ukraine’s president called on gas-rich Qatar and others to boost their energy exports to Europe in order to reduce the continent’s reliance on Russian hydrocarbons.
 
“Responsible states like the state of Qatar are reliable and solid exporters of natural resources, and they can make their contribution to the stabilization in Europe,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told the Doha Forum in Qatar’s capital on Saturday via a video address.

Russia holds military drills with S-400 missiles in Kaliningrad region

Russia has staged military drills engaging S-400 surface-to-air missiles in its western Kaliningrad exclave, Interfax reported on Saturday, citing the Baltic Fleet.
 
It said that Su-27 fighter jets were also deployed in the exercises.
 
Russia was also on Saturday conducting drills on islands claimed by Japan.

Ukraine's capital announces new 35-hour curfew

Authorities in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, have announced a new 35-hour curfew in the city.
 
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the curfew will run from 8 pm local time on Saturday to 7 am on Monday, with local residents allowed to leave their homes only to get to a bomb shelter.
 
Klitschko said that shops, pharmacies, gas stations and public transport will not be operating during the curfew.

The mayor of the besieged city of Mariupol said on Saturday he had spoken to France's ambassador to Ukraine about options for evacuating civilians, after French President Emmanuel Macron said he would propose to Russia a plan to help people leave.
 
Speaking on national television, Mayor Vadym Boichenko said the situation in the encircled city remained critical, with street fighting taking place in its centre.

Russia conducting drills on islands contested by Japan

Russia has said it is conducting drills on islands that are contested by Japan, days after withdrawing from peace treaty negotiations in response to Tokyo's decision to impose sanctions on Moscow for its ongoing invasion of Kiev, the BBC reported.

Four islands, which Russia calls the Southern Kurils and termed by the Japanese as the Northern Territories, are the subject of a more than 70-year-old dispute between the two nations.

Because of the dispute, Russia and Japan have not yet signed a post-World War II peace treaty, the BBC reported.

Ukraine president makes surprise appearance at Doha Forum

Ukraine's president made a surprise video appearance Saturday at Qatar's Doha Forum, calling on the energy-rich nation and others to boost their production to counteract the loss of Russian energy supplies.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the United Nations and world powers to come to his aid, as he has in a series of other addresses given around the world since the start of the war Feb. 24.

He compared Russia's destruction of the port city of Mariupol to the Syrian and Russian destruction wrought on the city of Aleppo in the Syrian war.

They are destroying our ports, Zelenskyy said. The absence of exports from Ukraine will deal a blow to countries worldwide.

The loss of Ukrainian wheat already has worried Mideast nations like Egypt, which relies on those exports.

International Emmy Awards to ban all Russian programmes from 2022 competition

In support of Ukraine, the executive committee of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced its decision to ban all Russian programmes from this year's International Emmy Awards competition.

As per Deadline, the organisation made the announcement via a statement released on Friday.

"In support of Ukraine, the executive committee of the International Academy has decided to bar all programs from Russia from this year's International Emmy Awards competition," the organisation said in the statement.

"This follows the previously announced action of suspending memberships, as well as all formal affiliations with Russia-based companies," the organisation added in its statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the Pariksha pe Charcha (PPC) interaction is light-hearted and gives one an opportunity to talk about different aspects of exams and life.

The event, where the prime minister interacts with students, is being organised for the last four years by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. The first three editions of PPC were held in New Delhi in an interactive town-hall format. The fourth edition was held online on April 7 last year.

"Pariksha Pe Charcha is interactive, light hearted and gives us all the opportunity to talk about different aspects of exams, studies, life and more...," the prime minister said in a tweet.

For the first time in 15 years, IPL sponsorships cross Rs 1,000 crore

The BCCI this year will earn little over Rs 1,000 crore from the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) central sponsorships, Inside Sport reported.

This will be record sponsorship revenue generated by BCCI till date in 15 seasons of IPL. tHE BCCI this year has signed a new title sponsor in the form of Tata and also two new associate sponsors.

The IPL GC recently announced new deals with RuPay and Swiggy Instamart as central sponsors for IPL. The board for the first time has filled all NINE sponsorship slots for the season, the report said.

The big increase is coming from two sources for the BCCI. First of all the number of sponsors has increased this year.

Delhi govt presents Rs 75,800 cr budget; aims to create 2 mn jobs in 5 yrs

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia presented a "Rozgar Budget" in the Assembly on Saturday with an outlay of Rs 75,800 crore for the financial year 2022-23, focussing on creating 2 million jobs in five years by setting up an electronic city and promoting night economy, retail and wholesale markets in the national capital.

The budget size for the next financial year is 9.86 per cent higher than that of the previous year -- Rs 69,000 crore -- Sisodia said, adding that Delhi's economy is recovering gradually from the impact of COVID-19.

"The Rozgar Budget will take the economy of Delhi on the path of progress and generate lakhs of employment opportunities," he asserted.
