Live news updates: Delhi and Tamil Nadu on Friday made masks mandatory in public and said it will fine Rs 500 for violations, responding to rising Covid-19 cases.

Delhi’s fine will not be applicable on people travelling together in private vehicles. 

Delhi on Thursday reported a dip in daily coronavirus cases and an improvement in positivity rate. The city recored saw 965 fresh infections, 635 recoveries, and one death from the disease.

SC seeks govt's response on plea against hate speech

The Supreme Court on Friday sought the government’s response on a plea asking the executive to examine various international laws and come out with "effective and stringent" measures to control hate speech and rumour-mongering in the country. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Abhay S Oka asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to examine the issue and ask concerned authorities to file an appropriate response, PTI reported.

The High Court in Jharkhand on Friday granted bail to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Prasad in the Doranda Treasury Case in which a CBI special court had sentenced him to five years in prison.
