Maha: MVA fields Sena's Rajan Salvi for Assembly Speaker post against BJP's Rahul Narvekar

Shiv Sena MLA Rajan Salvi on Saturday filed his nomination as the Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) candidate for the post of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker, election for which will be held on July 3.

On Friday, first-time BJP legislator Rahul Narvekar had filed his nomination for the post.

While Narvekar represents Colaba Assembly constituency in Mumbai, Salvi is the MLA from Rajapur segment in Ratnagiri district.

A special two-day Assembly session has been convened on July 3 and 4. While election for the speaker's post will be held on Sunday, the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, in whose cabinet BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is the deputy CM, will face the floor test the next day.

Capt Amarinder Singh to merge party with BJP, claims saffron party leader

Former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh is likely to merge his party Punjab Lok Congress with the BJP after his return from London, where he is recovering after a spinal surgery.

Though there is no word from the party, senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal on Saturday claimed that a decision in this connection has been made.

Before departing for London, Singh had conveyed his intention to merge his party with the BJP, Grewal said, adding the former chief minister will announce the merger on his return.

Naming colonies after Nitish Kumar, Narendra Modi immoral: Shivanand Tiwari

RJD vice-president Shivanand Tiwari on Saturday questioned Bihar government's decision of providing land to the landless for constructing houses and developing residential societies.

Though the initiative is good, the manner in which they are wanting to take credit for it is "absolutely wrong", he asserted.

"The state government should reconsider its decision of naming colonies after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Giving credit to a government's initiative in the names of living persons, especially the chief minister or prime minister, is unethical and immoral as it involves the hard-earned money of taxpayers," Tiwari said.

Centre makes FCRA stricter, amends seven points in 2011 rules

The Central government has made seven key amendments to existing rules of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) rules 2011 that aim at prohibiting acceptance and utilization of foreign contribution or foreign hospitality for any activities detrimental to the national interest.

The new rules, now renamed as Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2022, came into effect on Friday (July 1) with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issuing a notification and its publication in the Official Gazette. The new rules are an amendment to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Rules, 2011.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 48 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 (42 of 2010), the Central Government hereby makes the following rules further to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Rules, 2011. These rules may be called the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2022," stated the notification.

Musk back on Twitter after 10-day hiatus, feeling 'little bored'

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Saturday broke his 10-day long Twitter silence, admitting that he was feeling a bit bored.

Musk took his longest-ever 'digital detox' from Twitter in nearly five years, leaving his more than 100 million followers and the media speculating.

He last tweeted on June 22, before switching off from the micro-blogging platform which he uses to break news and fix people.

"Feeling a perhaps a a little bored?" Tweeted Musk.

Delhi Police produces Mohammed Zubair before court, seeks 14-day judicial custody

Delhi Police on Saturday produced Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair before a court here in a case related to an objectionable tweet he had posted in 2018 against a Hindu deity and sought his 14-day judicial custody.

Zubair was produced before the court on expiry of his five-day custodial interrogation.

The police told Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria that he was not required anymore for custodial interrogation.

Foreign devotees who joined the Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrations in Odisha's Puri, expressed their happiness and sought the blessings of Lord Jagannath.

After a gap of two years following the COVID pandemic, the Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrations began on Friday.

"There is so much devotion around. It's amazing to witness the Lord from so close, we are overjoyed with love and gratitude," a foreign devotee from England who joined Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri told to ANI.

Kanhaiya Lal murder case: NIA says no terror bodies involved, ATS contests

The Rajasthan Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) has contested the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) claim that terrorist organisations had no role in the hacking of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur.

Raising questions about NIA's claims, the state agency late on friday night, called it a premature statement as the investigation is still at a preliminary stage.

Notably, the state government suspended Udaipur Additional SP Ashok Kumar Meena on Friday evening. Earlier, SHO and SI were also suspended.

Most Twitter handles supporting Zubair from M-E, Pakistan: Delhi Police

Delhi Police have found that most of the Twitter handles that tweeted in support of fact-checker Mohammad Zubair were from Middle Eastern countries and Pakistan, an official said on Saturday.

"We found it during social media analysis that most of the Twitter accounts supporting Zubair after his arrest were from countries like the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Pakistan," a senior Delhi Police official told IANS.

The 33-year-old fact-checker is currently under police custody and is being interrogated over one of his objectionable tweets which he posted in 2018.

Fadnavis was in the loop, took Maharashtra Deputy CM post to honour PM Modi's call: Sources

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis was in the loop all along and aware of the developments taking place in the State said sources on Saturday and added that he accepted the post of the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra to honour the call of the top party leadership.

"Devendra was aware of every development that was happening in Maharashtra and without him and his sharp political acumen this could not have really happened. Therefore, it is too far-fetched to say that Fadnavis was not kept in the loop," a top functionary of the party told ANI.

Fadnavis went ahead and took oath as a Deputy CM after a call from PM Modi on at least two occasions, sources told ANI. Also, an appeal was made to Fadnavis on Twitter by BJP national president JP Nadda as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Sequoia Capital aims to raise $2.25 bn amid funding winter

US-based investment firm Sequoia Capital is reportedly raising new funds worth $2.25 billion from potential VCs in the funding winter.

The firm is working on a new $1.5 billion US growth fund focused on more mature companies, reports The Information.

The investment firm is also planning "a $750 million fund focused on earlier-stage deals," and aims to close the new funds this month, the report mentioned, citing sources.

iPhone 14 series demand likely to be higher than its predecessor: Report

The demand for tech giant Apple's much anticipated and upcoming iPhone 14 series is expected to be higher than iPhone 13 series in China.

A survey carried out by reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that suppliers and retailers are pre-paying significantly higher deposits for the first expected iPhone 14 units, reports GizmoChina.

In some regions the deposit is said to be double the amount, the report said.

Udaipur murder: Curfew relaxed for 4 hours

The district administration here has relaxed the curfew, imposed in seven police station limits in the aftermath of a tailor's murder by radical elements recently, for four hours from 12 pm, an official said.

Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death on Tuesday allegedly by two men for extending support on social media to a controversial remark against Prophet Mohammad by now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

The two alleged killers were arrested hours later in Rajsamand.
