With no untoward incidents being reported, normalcy is fast returning to the disturbed Golaghat district of Upper Assam.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today took stock of the prevailing law and order situation in Golaghat district and relief measures taken by the district administration for the camp inmates in the aftermath of violence along the Assam-Nagaland border on August 12-13.The deputy commissioner of the district apprised the chief minister about the latest law and order situation and said the situation was fast returning to normalcy with no fresh untoward incident reported from any part of the entire district during the past 24 hours.

The district administration is, however, taking no chances and precautionary measures are being enforced with clamping of night curfew from 10 am to 6 pm.

Meanwhile, 29 additional fixed security pickets have been set up in the B Sector of Assam-Nagaland border to provide security to the people living there.

The pickets are being manned by four companies of CRPF and five companies of SSB personnel. Three additional companies of Assam Police Battalions are also stationed there. Additional barracks for the security forces will be constructed. Necessary funds have been earmarked for this purpose, said Gogoi.

Following the improvement in the law and order situation along the inter-state border and in the entire district, 5,099 inmates living in relief camps have returned home. 147 inmates have left the camps in the last 24 hours.

Of the 14 relief camps opened by the district administration, three have been closed down. Altogether 9,837 displaced persons of 16 villages were living in relief camps since August 15.

The state government has also decided to strengthen the existing Border Out Posts (BOPs) along the inter-state border by improving infrastructure and providing equipments to improve effectiveness of the security forces located there. In a meeting today, state's chief secretary, Jitesh Khosla, decided that the existing 81 BOPs along the inter-state border will be repaired or reconstructed along with provision of additional physical infrastructure such as barracks, security fencing, bunkers, water and sanitation facilities, etc. An amount of Rs 17 crore is proposed to be made available for the purpose within this financial year.
