Patent waver for Covid vaccine without tech transfer won't speed up supply

Intellectual property rights (IPR) on drugs and vaccine formulae give creators an exclusive right over inventions for a certain period of time, and prevent pharmaceutical companies from making it.

Sharing vaccine formulae for COVID-19 with developing countries will not help mitigate the global pandemic crisis as many of these countries did not have the capacity to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines adequately, Bill Gates, one of the world's leading billionaires and philanthropists, said on April 25. A few days later, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, of which he is co-chair, issued a statement saying they support a "narrow intellectual property waiver for COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic". The Gates Foundation has been involved with vaccine-development efforts since early into the COVID-19 pandemic.
