One of the suspects in the Patna serial blasts, Meher-e-Alam, who was picked up from Darbhanga in north Bihar a couple of days ago and detained for questioning, has escaped from custody in Muzaffarpur on Thursday.

According to TV reports, Alam managed to hoodwink National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths.

Meher-e-Alam is a close aide of Tehseen Akhtar, a top operative of the Indian Mujahideen, who allegedly mentored the Patna bombers.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde gave the NIA charge of the blasts' probe at the behest of the Bihar CM.

Details are awaited.
