On the backdrop of drought like situation in Maharshtra and to keep a close eye on water distribution and management, Pune Municipal Corporation has partnered with a Swiss major Endress Hauser AG to install electromagnetic water meters in its one of the water supply division in the city.
PMC the first civic body in the state to use technology for better management of water. The project aims to provide a boost to the water resources for Pune and will largely address the problem of water shortage in the city.
The company has been associated with similar projects in the states of Tamilnadu, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Uttarpradesh.

These flow meters check for leakages in pipelines, the quality of the water pumped in from the source, which could be a river or a dam, and the quantity of water pumped out after the treatment plant, the water level and a specific place and also provides analytical measurements to understand the quality of water.
The water management system will help Pune Municipal Corporation to save water up to 25 per cent. We plan to do similar water management project for other cities in Maharashtra in this year."
Nandkishor Jagtap, executive engineer of PMC's water supply department said, "These meters are equipped with an electromagnetic device and will be very useful in managing water supply within the division. If there are any complaint of low pressure, we can increase pressure at the discharge point. Earlier, the entire process was based on personal judgement."

In several locations the flow meters are hooked up by GPRS, to a computer at water works office of Municipal Corporation through which the entire water flow is been electronically monitored. The readings of water level are also available on mobile via SMS facility to all the Pune Municipal Corporation water officials.
